Anglers Gearing Up For Garden State Surf Fishing Classic

Anglers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the Garden State Surf Fishing Classic, the state’s premier fishing tournament being held this Sunday, May 17, at Island Beach State Park in Ocean County.

The annual tournament brings awareness to New Jersey’s rich cultural heritage of recreational saltwater fishing and the importance of protecting the state’s marine resources. The popular family event allows participants to hone their surf fishing skills while competing for the ultimate catch. Registration begins at 5 a.m. for those who are not pre-registered. Fishing will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Potosnak will participate in the tournament awards ceremony at 2 p.m.

Rowan Softball to Square Off with St. Thomas in NCAA Regional Opener

#17 Softball will take on St. Thomas (Texas) to begin the 2026 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament as selections and regional pairings were announced on Monday.

The Profs, who are making its 32nd appearance all time in the national tournament and fourth in as many seasons, will battle the Celts, out of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), at the regional host East Texas Baptist on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 2:30 PM ET/1:30 PM CT (local time). Rowan returns to Marshall, Texas, home of ETBU for the first time since back-to-back appearances in the Division III Championship Tournament in 2023 and 2024. The Profs added a third-straight championship tournament appearance last season and this year look to make it a fourth.

HOME COUNTRY: When we first noticed the baby sparrow, here at the house, it saddened us all.

When we first noticed the baby sparrow, here at the house, it saddened us all. He had fallen from his nest and was slowly walking around the front yard under the tree while his mother and father had an absolute fit. 

   We knew we were looking at a dead baby bird, as it was only a question of who does it, where it is done, and how long before it happens. Years of experience in these kinds of things have taught us the finality of a baby bird falling out of a tree. Would the end come from a cat, or from a raccoon wandering up from Lewis Creek, or a snake? One of the problems with being a baby bird is that almost everything with teeth wants to eat you, and if you can’t fly, there’s not much you can do about it. We learned that picking the baby up and putting him back in the nest wouldn’t work, so we were forced to just watch his timid movements around the yard and whisper to him, “I’m sorry, pal.”

Double Shooting

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group is currently investigating a double shooting that occurred early Monday evening in the city’s 25th District. At approximately 5:05 PM, gunfire erupted on the 100 block of West Somerset Street, leaving two people injured.

Following the incident, two victims arrived at local hospitals via private vehicles. The first victim, an adult male, is currently listed in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. The second victim, an adult female, sought treatment at Episcopal Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

At this time, no arrests have been made, and a motive has not yet been determined. This investigation remains active and ongoing.

Rowan Baseball Will Open Play in the NCAA Regional at Southern Maine

The fifth-ranked Rowan baseball team will begin play in the 2026 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in the Gorham, Maine Regional on May 15-17. The Profs will face RIT in the first game, with host Southern Maine and Babson rounding out the field in the double-elimination regional. 

Rowan and RIT (24-13) will face off in Game 1 of the regional (time tba) with Southern Maine (30-10) hosting Babson (26-13) in Game 2, with the tournament consisting of three games on Saturday and possibly two on Sunday.

La Salle University inducts students into Alpha Epsilon Honor Society

La Salle University inducted 20 students into the Alpha Epsilon Honor Society on April 2, 2026. The Alpha Epsilon Honor Society was instituted at La Salle University in 1936 to recognize “high scholarship in the pursuit of a Lasallian education together with exceptional participation in the extracurricular life of the University.” Since its founding, many of La Salle’s finest alumni have been proudly counted among the Alpha Epsilon ranks.
