During recent Assembly gatherings—voting and committee sessions—various Assembly members have taken time to bid farewell to some of the legislators who will soon be completing their final legislative term.
On December 8, the Assembly wished farewell to Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter, Assemblywoman Garnet Hall and Assemblyman John Allen.
Assemblywoman Sumter was honored for her years of impactful work which leave a lasting legacy. A champion for maternal health, mental health access, economic opportunity, and equity, in addition to chairing the Assembly Community Development and Women’s Affairs Committee, Assemblywoman Sumter also served as Chair of the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus, advocating tirelessly for communities across the state. Assembly members Shanique Speight, Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Al Abdelaziz—her legislative district partner—shared heartfelt thanks and well wishes as they bid farewell.
Assemblywoman Hall was also recognized for her dedication and care in serving her constituents, with Assemblywoman Linda Carter highlighting the difference Hall made throughout her tenure.
Assemblyman Allen, representing the bustling cities of Hoboken and Jersey City, was also wished well by colleagues, including his legislative partner Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez, who praised his commitment to residents and public service.
Assemblyman Reginald Atkins chaired his final Oversight, Reform, and Federal Relations Committee meeting on December 11, reflecting on a career defined by respect, purpose, and collaboration. Fellow Democrats—Assemblymen Cody Miller, Kevin Egan, and Roy Freiman—thanked him for his years of service and dedication to New Jersey.
Most recently, at this week’s December 22 voting session, the General Assembly honored Assemblyman Julio Marenco, who was recognized for his service in championing working families to advancing smart, community-focused legislation by his colleagues, including Assemblywoman Carmen Morales and Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin.
