Funeral Services Set For Corrections Officer Isiah Hampton Watkins

Family, friends, officials, and first responders from throughout the region will be attending a Celebration of Life service for Camden County Corrections Officer Isiah Hampton Watkins on Thursday, March 26 at Bethany Baptist Church (1115 E Gibbsboro Rd, Lindenwold, 08021) at interment will follow at Harleigh Cemetery (1640 Haddon Ave, Camden, 08103) at 4 p.m. The procession from the church to the cemetery will pass the Camden County Correctional Facility.

The throwback energy is strong at the South Philly arena this week. The team continues its 2001 Eastern Conference Championship 25th Anniversary celebration with a special Iverson shersey (get it, shirt/jersey) giveaway to the first 2,001 fans during Monday’s game. It’s a reunion on Wednesday, as the team celebrates its most unforgettable players for Homecoming Night, plus fans can go home with a limited-edition Mitchell & Ness T-shirt.

Almost five months without a homicide, the CCPD continues to make progress

(Camden, NJ) – As flowers begin to bloom and the temperatures start to rise, the Camden County Police Department has hit another unprecedented high point in its quest to reduce crime in the city. For the first time since the 1970s, the city recorded zero homicides for the official start and finish of the winter months. This milestone reflects the sustained decline in violent crime throughout the city, and underscores the historic reduction in crime achieved since Camden was once considered one of the most dangerous municipalities in the nation prior to May 1, 2013.

Van Drew: Pay Workers Now, Stop Congressional Pay During Shutdown

Congressman Van Drew released the following statement regarding the ongoing partial shutdown.

“This has gone on long enough,” said Congressman Van Drew. “The people paying the price right now are the ones showing up every day to do their jobs: TSA agents, Coast Guard members, and others who keep this country running. They are doing everything we ask of them, day in and day out, and they are not being paid for it. It is not right. And that is exactly why Members of Congress should not be paid during a shutdown. If these workers are going without, then we should be going without too. We should be feeling that same pain until this gets fixed. That is why I am sponsoring a bill to ensure that while the government shuts down, Members of Congress do not receive their pay. The Constitution sets clear rules on congressional pay, so this has to be done the right way, but there is a path to make sure Members do not take home a paycheck while the job is not done. Maybe then they will think twice before using people’s livelihoods as leverage in a political fight.”

Camden County YOUth Influencer Summit

Commissioner Jennifer Cooley Fleisher will join educators, advocates, and local leaders, today at Rowan University – Chamberlain Student Center, 183 Rowan Blvd, Glassboro, at 10 a.m. for the Camden County YOUth Influencer Summit at Rowan University. The event will bring together 250 students in grades 7-10 from across Camden County for an interactive experience designed to empower students with leadership and advocacy skills to help them create or strengthen student-led initiatives in their schools and communities.
