Tom Goldschmidt – Teacher Extraordinare

Tom was my English teacher at Gloucester Catholic High School in South Jersey fifty-five years ago. He died last week at the age of eighty-one. He graduated first in his class at Villanova many years ago and came back for a few years to his former high school to teach us and to serve as an excellent role model.

I told Tom on a few occasions that he was the best teacher I ever had – in high school or in college. He was an excellent lecturer and an elevating presence to students like me, who surely were in need of some elevation. He continued in teaching for many years at Moorestown High School before moving into the real estate industry.

COLORFUL MURALS PAY HOMAGE TO PAST AND PRESENT BRIDGE WORKERS

New Murals Craft a Better Transportation Experience for Pedestrians, Motorists

Two new murals, which adorn the walls of the 5th Street Vehicular and Pedestrian Tunnels located beneath the Ben Franklin Bridge, were unveiled during a dedication ceremony on Saturday, November 3, 2018.

The public was invited to see the artwork up close during the event, which was held at 5th and Race Streets in downtown Philadelphia.

“The Delaware River Port Authority has a strong commitment to building community and supporting community initiatives. The development and installation of these murals helps to strengthen that commitment,” said DRPA CEO John Hanson during the ceremony.

Six Philadelphia Women Sentenced For Fraudulent Tax Refund Scheme

PHILADELPHIA (November 2018)(CNBNewsnet)– First Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced today that six Philadelphia women, several of whom are sisters and cousins, have been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution for their role in a scheme to defraud the United States through the filing of false claims for tax refunds.

The six defendants all pleaded guilty and admitted to engaging in a scheme to present false federal income tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), in order to generate fraudulent federal income tax refunds.  Dozens of false tax returns were filed with the IRS, often using names and social security numbers stolen from individuals who were unaware their personal identifiers were being used to perpetrate the fraud.

Joseph R. Peterson, of Gloucester City; WW II Navy Veteran; Philadelphia Shipyard Machinist

Gloucester City – On November 7, 2018. Age 92. Born in Gloucester City, he was the son of the late Joseph R. and Sara (Alloway) Peterson. Beloved father of Debra A. Peterson and Barbara Brown; grandfather of Neonta Peterson-Sittinghawk; great-grandfather of Eliyah, Elliott, Seth, Asa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Joseph honorably served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy, serving 36 months at sea during the American Area Campaign, European Mid-E Campaign and the Asiatic Pacific Area on the USS Osage (LSV-3). He was Coxswain of a LCM 77 in the 5th wave making 11 trips to Omaha Beach and was one of the lucky men who survived D-Day. He later worked as a Marine Machinist for the Philadelphia Shipyard in Philadelphia. Joseph was a longtime member of Southwood Baptist Church in Woodbury.

5 Cases of Ocean County Measles Outbreak

The New Jersey Department of Health is warning residents that 5 additional cases of measles — a highly contagious disease — have been confirmed in Ocean County.  This brings the total to 11 confirmed cases. These individuals could have exposed others to the infection while in Ocean County on November 1.

Anyone who visited the following locations may have been exposed to measles:

The Department is working in collaboration with the Ocean County Health Department to identify and notify people who might have been exposed during the time the individuals were infectious. Deadly Adenovirus Outbreak Infects Four More Kids

Lab testing over the weekend confirmed that four more children have been infected by adenovirus at the Wanaque Center, a pediatric long-term care facility in Passaic County. The state Health Department confirmed Monday that the viral outbreak has killed ten young patients. So far 33 patients have been infected, as well as one adult who works there. The first case of the virus was reported Sept. 26, and the most recent was on Friday, Nov. 9th. (NJ Advance Media)

Samaritan’s Tree of Life Ceremonies for Communities to Remember Your Loved Ones

Marlton, N.J. –The community is invited to a special annual tradition.  Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice presents its Tree of Life ceremonies at five area locations. The moving ceremonies serve as an opportune place to gather family and friends to remember loved ones.

The candlelight ceremonies are open to the public and feature inspirational readings and music provided by local musicians and choirs, followed by refreshments and fellowship. Individuals may dedicate a light on the tree in memory of someone who has passed or in honor of someone special in their life. Proceeds from optional donations benefit the patients, families, and programs of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice.

Gloucester County Caregivers Honored

(Deptford, NJ)(November 2018)(CNBNewsnet) — Gloucester County Senior Services hosted the annual Caregiver Appreciation Luncheon at Auletto Caterers in Deptford. Freeholder Heather Simmons gave the welcome remarks at the event.

The annual Caregiver Appreciation Luncheon is held in recognition of those who spend their time taking care of others.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger, “It is our honor thank and support our caregivers. Along with recognizing them for their work with this annual luncheon, Gloucester County offers the Caregiver Support Program, providing support and assistance to caregivers and helping them in access services to help them with the important work they do.”

Services include assistance to grandparents raising grandchildren, information, assistance and guidance to navigate through the system of available in-home support services for the caregiver’s loved ones, access to supplemental services to ease the strain on the caregiver, individual counseling and support, and a monthly Support Group.
