It’s Thanksgiving week. At Taxpayers for Common Sense, we thought we’d do what so many Americans do at this time of year – take stock of those things for which we are thankful. But we did it with a bit of a TCS twist. We were going to list all the things we’re grateful the Congress did this year, but we like to give you around 600 words of content and to be blunt, the 114^th Congress’s accomplishments can be described in two: \”not much.\”

The State Local Finance Board recently fined four Gloucester City officials $100 each for refusing to file the Financial Disclosure Statements (FDS) due on April 30, 2008. The four officials who were fined are:

Ryan Murphy, Planning & Zoning Board

Jack Brandt, Planning & Zoning Board Alternate

Colleen Hagan, Library Board

Joanne B. Gurick, Library Board

I originally filed my complaint on September 11, 2009, against nineteen (19) Gloucester City officials for failing to file their FDS.

On January 31, 2011, and February 28, 2011, I received updates from the Local Finance Board advising that:

CAPE MAY, N.J. – Recruits from Coast Guard Training Center Cape May are scheduled to spend Thanksgiving with residents of South Jersey, Thursday, as part of Operation Fireside.

Approximately 100 host families have volunteered to open their homes to the service’s newest volunteers this Thanksgiving in the Red Cross’ 35th annual Operation Fireside program. Approximately 350 recruits will get the opportunity to spend the day with the family, eat a home-cooked meal and relax.

On Friday, October 30, 2015, the New Jersey Foundation for Open Government (\”NJFOG\”) attended a hearing in Kaplan v. Kratovil at New Brunswick Family Court. The hearing was to determine whether the Court would enter a Final Restraining Order (\”FRO\”) against the Defendant based on an Open Public Records Act (\”OPRA\”) request he filed with the City of New Brunswick. The Plaintiff, Ms. Kaplan, alleged that the Defendant, Mr. Kratovil, was harassing her because he filed an OPRA request that named, among other people, Ms. Kaplan\’s husband, who is on the New Brunswick Rent Control Board.

The holidays are upon us and it is the time of giving. The giving of gifts, the giving of time, the giving of goodwill…and most importantly, the giving of thanks. 

As a volunteer, I want to thank every person who has supported the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association. Perhaps it’s a donation, attending a Heart Walk, championing a healthy change or supporting your child in a Jump Rope For Heart program. No matter how you’ve shown support, I want you to know that you have made a difference.

 

(New York, N.Y. – November 24, 2015) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $158,000 to Rutgers University to provide training and technical assistance to food production, processing, storage and distribution companies in the Newark, New Jersey area to reduce their releases of greenhouse gases.

They have been spotted in 27 states, including nearby Pennsylvania, but so far the nocturnal triatomine bug, commonly called the kissing bug, has not migrated to the Garden State. Triatomine bugs, also known as kissing bugs, can carry a parasite that causes Chagas disease, a potentially life-threatening illness. An investigation last week by the Dallas Morning…

Before You Go

• Fill up your gas tank. Make sure you’re not running low on gas in case it takes time to find parking or to get out of the parking lot. Or, in case you get delayed by winter weather conditions.
• Decide how you’ll pay. If possible, carry only credit cards, and make photocopies so that you’ll have the account number and customer service phone number if your wallet is lost or stolen. If it\’s practical, carry just one card.

When the 102 Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock in the fall of 1620, they were greeted by a New World filled with uncertainty, turmoil, and harsh conditions. Only half of the original settlers survived the first year, but despite the hardships faced, the Pilgrims still made it a point to spend time at the end of their first harvest with family and their community to feast and be thankful.

 

We would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to the sponsors, coaches, volunteers and others that invest their time, money and effort into our community\’s youth to make the Gloucester City Youth Soccer League the success it is. This past season was an amazing one and I\’m sure we cannot begin to digest the amount of time, planning and organization that goes into such an organization.
