SEWELL — In the grand scheme of the NJSIAA South Jersey playoffs, the outcome of the Gloucester Catholic vs. Schalick game meant nothing. But to the two teams, their meeting on a dreary, overcast Saturday meant everything.
Gloucester Catholic and Schalick entered the game a combined 0-14.
For the Rams, who carry the longest losing streak in South Jersey, it represented a chance to win for the first time since beating Highland on Oct. 12, 2013. For Schalick, which has been decimated by injuries this season and gone through four different quarterbacks, winning meant snapping its seven-game losing streak that dated to last Nov. 26, when it beat Cumberland.
Gloucester Catholic came within 15 minutes, 51 seconds of breaking its losing streak, but Schalick responded with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 16-7 victory.
Schalick improved to 1-7 overall, while Gloucester Catholic lost for the 23rd straight time and fell to 0-8 this year.
