Brandywine Creek State Park to hold annual controlled deer hunt Dec. 16-17

WILMINGTON (Dec. 11, 2014) – Brandywine Creek State Park will be completely closed to the general public on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and Wednesday, Dec. 17 – including the nature center and park office – for its annual controlled deer hunt, DNREC announced today.

Managed by the Division of Fish & Wildlife and the Division of Parks and Recreation, the hunt will be conducted from deer stands and will encompass both sides of the park. Signs and staff members will be posted in the park to alert the public about the hunt.

Project SNOWStorm will track owl’s future voyage

$\"\"$ MARYLAND–Wildlife experts from DNR, The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research released a rehabilitated female snowy owl on the beaches of Assateague State Park on December 11. The team has been caring for and working with the bird since she was found with a wing injury last March in Baltimore. Before her send-off, the owl was outfitted with a small tracking device so her travels could be chronicled through Project SNOWstorm.

The owl, now referred to as Delaware, was initially banded along the Delaware Atlantic shore last December and presumably spent the winter somewhere in the mid-Atlantic region.

24 drug dealers charged in Armstrong and Clarion counties

HARRISBURG – Twenty-four suspected drug dealers selling mostly heroin today were charged by state narcotics agents following a street-level sweep that brought together more than a dozen law enforcement agencies to fight heroin trafficking in Armstrong and Clarion counties.

Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane said the charges are the culmination of a seven-month investigation conducted by her office, Armstrong District Attorney Scott Andreassi and Clarion District Attorney Mark Aaron, which resulted in the seizure of 200 bricks or 10,000 bags of heroin worth $80,000.

Obituary: Alexander F. DiPietro of Deptford

Legacy

Alexander was a hardworking man with traditional values. During WWII, he proudly served in the US Army as anti-aircraft gunner and was part of the Allied Invasion of Normandy. Prior to retirement, he was employed with Pennsylvania Railroad in 1946 and retired as a rail supervisor with Conrail of Pavonia Yard, Camden in 1981. Alexander enjoyed watching sports on TV and in earlier years, enjoyed bowling at Ivy and Maple Lanes.

Family

He is the beloved husband of the late Teresa C. (nee Carey); devoted father of Phyllis Kareha (Rich), Stephen (Tricia) and Joseph (Terry) DiPietro; loving grandfather of Zachary, Amy, Kristin, Lauren, Dominic, Mark and Katie; also survived by his grand-dog, Scout.

Milton Miller IV Off to Prison for Robbery; Used Baseball Bat as a Weapon

WOODBURY NJ– Milton E. Miller IV, of Woodbury NJ, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery of a Woodbury man at the victim’s apartment on 7/23/14 using a baseball bat as a weapon, was sentenced today (12/12) to five years in New Jersey state prison.

The sentence requires Miller to serve 85 percent of the prison term before he can be considered for parole, Superior Court Judge Kevin T. Smith said, noting that the defendant seemed to have learned little from a long history of criminal offenses.
