Esther Marie Pye, of Bellmawr, Co-Founder of Pye Electric, Woodbury HS Class of \’57 Alumnus

Esther Marie Pye (nee Hansen) age 74, of Bellmawr on Sept. 16, 2013.

Mrs. Pye was first and foremost a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great \"Images-3\" grandmother. Her family was always her priority. She was a graduate of Woodbury High School class of 1957, and enjoyed creating numerous types of crafts and projects with her grandchildren. She had an infectious laugh, and loved her word finds, crossword puzzles, and the card games on her computer. She was an avid bowler and participated in many tournaments all over the country with the Women\’s International Bowling Congress. Esther was the President of the electrical contracting business that she and her husband ran for 15 years (Pye Electric), and was also very active with Senior Helpers out of Cherry Hill.

Beloved wife of 55 years to Albert, Jr.; loving mother of Albert III (Marlene), Cynthia (Dale) Pugh, and Valerie (John) Childress; adoring grandmother of Amanda (Andrew), Kati (Don), Albert IV, Christopher (Idamary), Brian, Brittany, Johnny, and Courtney; great grandmother of 9; dear sister of Walter Hansen, Martha (Robert) Bliss, Carl (Carol) Hansen, the late Larry Hansen, the late Kenny Hansen, and the late Jean Alloway; also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Monday, September 23, 2013 in the McGUINNESS FUNERAL HOME, 34 Hunter St., Woodbury from 9am to 11am. Farewell service will be held at 11AM. Interment will follow at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro. Memories and tributes may be shared at www.mcgfuneral.com

ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT’S WEEKLY COLUMN: LESSONS WE NEED TO LEARN

PHILADELPHIA PA–Most Americans have immigrant roots. I\’m no exception. While my mother\’s family was Native \"Chaput-suit-portrait-outline-for-web-small\" American (Prairie Band Potowatomi), my father\’s heritage was French Canadian. Growing up in the 1950s, I was very aware that French-speaking Canada – Quebec – was among the most deeply Catholic regions in the world. For more than 200 years, the Church in Quebec not only preached the Gospel, educated the young and ministered to the poor and infirm, but also sustained French language and culture in the face of Canada\’s English-speaking Protestant majority.

 

Quebec\’s \”Quiet Revolution\” destroyed all that in just a few decades. Starting in the mid-20th century and speeding up quickly after Vatican II, Quebeckers left the Church in droves. Today barely 5 percent of Quebeckers attend Mass regularly. The Church is often seen as an object of scorn. How did it happen? There\’s no single reason. Church leaders brought some of the trouble on themselves through overconfidence, inertia and an inability to see the changing terrain of their people. Consumerism colonized the lay faithful. And the culture became dominated by new and highly secularized leaders in politics, education and mass media.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – A dual-degree program combining a doctorate in pharmacy with a medical degree has been developed by Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

The schools, part of the new Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, will launch the new PharmD/MD program within the next year. Health care education professionals believe that this program will be the first of its kind and could become a model to better prepare the experts who will drive national health-care policy in the wake of the Affordable Care Act.

How Many Die From Medical Mistakes in U.S. Hospitals?

It seems that every time researchers estimate how often a medical mistake contributes to a hospital patient’s death, the numbers come out worse.

In 1999, the Institute of Medicine published the famous \”To Err Is Human\” report, which dropped a bombshell on the medical community by reporting that up to 98,000 people a year die because of mistakes in hospitals. The number was initially disputed, but is now widely accepted by doctors and hospital officials — and quoted ubiquitously in the media.

2013 Tips From Former Smokers campaign generates 150,000 calls to quitlines and 2.8 million website visits

 

Quitline calls spiked dramatically when 2013 ads were running; fell quickly when they were not \"Tips_2_MMWR_quitlines 

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2013 Tips From Former Smokers campaign produced more than 150,000 additional calls to 1-800-QUIT NOW, a number that links callers to their state quitlines, according to a report in this week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The campaign also generated almost 2.8 million additional visitors to the campaign website,www.cdc.gov/tips. The website features information on the campaign, as well as information on how to quit smoking from the National Cancer Institute’s www.smokefree.gov website.
