First Lady Mary Pat Christie Honors Horizons Student Enrichment Co-Founder

Monmouth County Resident Lore Macdonald Recognized As 22nd New Jersey Hero

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Trenton, NJ – First Lady Mary Pat Christie today honored Lore Macdonald, co-founder of the Horizons Student Enrichment Program at Rumson Country Day School for her commitment to ensuring educational opportunities for at-risk children. Ms. Macdonald has been an influential force in Horizons New Jersey since its inception, overseeing the program\’s incredible growth from one Kindergarten class of just 15 children to a fully mature program of 125 children in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

\”Lore is truly the heart of Horizons New Jersey,\” said Mrs. Christie. \”For 18 years, she has impacted and helped change the lives of some 2,000 children. Whether it’s teaching classes, chaperoning field trips, community outreach or fundraising, Lore’s tireless efforts are making a difference for many children and families in the community. I am so inspired by her dedication and I am proud to name her a New Jersey Hero.\”

The six-week academic and recreational summer enrichment program currently is serving 128 local children (grades K-8) in the Monmouth County area who are living in low income circumstances.

Lore Macdonald’s involvement with the students and their families extends far past summer and into high school and beyond. Through her hands-on work with the students, she has helped Horizons sustain itself over the years by leading fundraising efforts including the Hoops for Horizons Basketball Tournament. Just recently, she was honored by Horizons National for her outstanding contribution to students and their families and was named life member of the Horizons Board of Advisors.

\”Horizons is the best example of a public-private partnership that I’ve ever known,\” said co-founder Lore Macdonald. \”Being part of the program has brought great joy to me and others for many years, and will continue to do so. I am truly honored to be receiving this recognition and I accept it on behalf of Horizons’ staff and board, its students and families, Rumson Country Day School, Horizons National and its other affiliates across the country.\”

Through its professional and nurturing environment, Horizons is committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that enhance self-esteem, foster awareness of community responsibility, build problem solving skills and encourage a life-long-interest in learning. The program emphasizes academics, the arts, intramural sports, swimming, and social growth.

Angela Corey’s Checkered Past | National Review Online

\"AngelaAngela Corey (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

What happened in the weeks and months that followed was instructive. Dershowitz says that he was flooded with correspondence from people telling him that this is Corey’s well-known M.O. He says numerous sources — lawyers who had sparred with Corey in the courtroom, lawyers who had worked with and for her, and even multiple judges — informed him that Corey has a history of vigorously attacking any and all who criticize her. But it’s worse than that: Correspondents told him that Corey has a history of overcharging and withholding evidence.

The Zimmerman trial is a clear case of the former and a probable case of the latter. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder, also known as \”depraved mind\” murder. The case law for that charge, an attorney who has worked in criminal prosecution outside Florida tells me, is near-unanimous: It almost never applies to one-on-one encounters. Second-degree murder is the madman who fires indiscriminately into a crowd or unlocks the lions’ cage at the zoo. \”Nothing in the facts of this case approaches that.\” Which Angela Corey, a veteran prosecutor, should have known, and a grand jury would have told her. In fact, both the initial police investigation and the original state attorney in charge of the case had determined exactly that: There was no evidence of any crime, much less second-degree murder

But that did not stop Corey from zealously overcharging and — the facts suggest — withholding evidence to ensure that that charge stuck.

Still, by the end of the case it was clear that the jury was unlikely to convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder; hence the prosecution’s addition of a manslaughter charge — as well as its attempt to add a charge for third-degree murder by way of child abuse — after the trial had closed. \”In 50 years of practice

Obama enters Martin debate with personal remarks, questions \’stand-your-ground\’

President Obama publicly and personally addressed the Trayvon Martin case for the first time since George Zimmerman was acquitted nearly a week ago, relating his own experiences to the \”pain\” the black community is feeling and going on to question so-called \”stand-your-ground\” laws.

The president delivered extensive remarks during a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room. He suggested race may have played a strong role in the case, saying that if a \”white male teen\” were involved, \”both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.\”

He went far beyond his remarks a year ago in which he stirred controversy by saying if he had a son, he\’d look like Martin.

\”Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago,\” Obama said.

As you can see from reading the captions in the photo, the question that is being asked is why the shooting of a white boy never became the topic of the mainstream media as it has become the tradegy of Trayvon Martin case..

If we are going to have an open discussion on race in America lets air both sides of the issue, not just those of African Americans. ~Bill Cleary

At least one distinction can be drawn between the two deaths: In the aftermath of Trayvon Martin\’s shooting, commentators and protesters across the country accused Zimmerman of racial profiling for shooting an unarmed black teenager in a hoodie. No such accusations were made against Deleston, who investigators say was planning to rob a nearby sports bar when Lion pulled up in his vehicle and Deleston attempted to rob him instead.
