New York\’s Creep-Off Election by Andrew Klavan – City Journal

What kind of creep-fest are New Yorkers staging this election, for crying out loud? As I’m hearing it out on the West Coast, the lead candidate for mayor is a guy who tweeted pictures of his dingus to various women and then publicly lied about it, and the comptroller race is between a whoremonger and the madam who supplied him. Really? The YMCA used to have a slogan: \”Character counts.\” In New York from now on, you ought to add, \”For nothing.\”

The madam is a libertarian and, as I understand it, a bit of a joke. But the dingus-tweeter, disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, and the hooker boy, disgraced former governor Eliot Spitzer, both Democrats, are considered serious candidates. That makes sense, I guess. The Democrats are the party that celebrated Teddy Kennedy as the Lion of the Senate, even after he drove his likely mistress into the drink and left her to drown. This is the party of a president who carried on a sleazy Oval Office affair with a woman half his age and had his minions slander and intimidate other women who plausibly accused him of rape and grotesque sexual harassment. And, of course, this is the party of former congressman Barney Frank, who fixed parking tickets for his gay escort lover but remained in office so he could help destroy the nation’s economy by facilitating bad housing loans.

Of course, the GOP has its share of sexual rogues and clowns. South Carolina governor Mark Sanford spent taxpayer dollars while carrying on an extramarital affair in Argentina and then (which is worse in my book) cried about it—and yet he still made a successful comeback run for Congress. Congressman Mark Foley took strong action against child pornography when he wasn’t sending sexually suggestive e-mails to underage male pages. And who could forget Senator Larry Craig, whose continue via www.city-journal.org

Hundreds call to adopt Down syndrome baby, save it from abortion

When the Rev. Thomas Vander Woude learned about a young couple planning to abort their unborn baby that had been diagnosed with Down syndrome, the priest reached out and offered a deal: Deliver the child and he would help find an appropriate adoptive family.

But he had to act fast.

The woman, who has not been identified for her privacy and her protection, was just shy of six months pregnant and lives in a state that prohibits abortions past 24 weeks — which meant he had a short time to find a family willing to make a lifelong commitment.

So Father Vander Woude, the lead pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, Va., approached a volunteer who helped manage the church’s social media pages, and she posted an urgent plea on Facebook early Monday morning.

\”There is a couple in another state who have contacted an adoption agency looking for a family to adopt their Down Syndrome unborn baby. If a couple has not been found by today they plan to abort the baby. If you are interested in adopting this baby please contact Fr. VW IMMEDIATELY,\” the post read. \”We are asking all to pray for this baby and the wisdom that this couple realize the importance of human life and do not abort this beautiful gift from God.\”

Reiter new coach for Rutgers-Camden women\’s basketball | cnbnews.net

\"Annette

CAMDEN, N.J. – Annette Reiter is coming home to South Jersey and home to the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

A former scholastic basketball star and high school coach in South Jersey, Reiter has been hired as the new women’s basketball head coach at Rutgers University-Camden after one season as the head coach at Penn State-Abington. In returning to her South Jersey roots, she also returns to the NJAC, where she served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Rowan University.

\”I’m more than thrilled,\” said Reiter, who was a star player at both Gloucester Catholic High School and Widener University. \”I know the teams that participate in NJAC, which I consider one of the top Division III conferences in the country. I’m familiar with the program. I’ve been watching Rutgers-Camden play for years. I feel like I know the prospective student-athlete population in South Jersey. I would love to see South Jersey athletes stay in South Jersey to compete at the collegiate level. It’s a great recruiting opportunity for me.\”

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: A Supreme Court battleground is gone. Mt Ephraim\’s Fantasy Showbar.

\"_DSC2568\"

By Mark Matthews

Mt Ephraim NJ – This week the Fantasy Showbar building was demolished to make room for a new Taco Bell.

Even if you\’ve never set foot in the building, everyone in the area knew of the Fantasy Showbar. Its large and somewhat graphically worded front roadside sign made it very clear what was going on inside. Some, like me, remember when it was originally a Thom McCann shoe store.

But what many don\’t realize, is it was also the battleground for a legal case that made its way to the Supreme Court in 1981. Considering only about 80 cases are heard by the Supreme Court, and another 50 are decided without hearing arguments… it\’s amazing that this small town case made it so far.

As reported last year in the Gloucester City News, and posted here at Cleary\’s Notebook, the property is to become a Taco Bell and as of last fall the plans include a second business at the location.

GCN Reporter Hobbs reported \”Current Mount Ephraim ordinance does not allow more than one primary use per lot, prohibits drive-throughs and only allows one sign per use\”. After the presentation, the preliminary plans were approved.

The Courier-Post quotes Mt Ephraim Mayor James Wolk as saying back in December \”What a Christmas gift for the borough of Mount Ephraim! This is a tremendous thing for the borough.\”

Coincidentally, it was wide zoning laws which brought the Fantasy Showbar and Mt Ephraim to the Supreme Court. Mt Ephraim had an ordinance which banned all live entertainment. The case has many references in the internet and has earned pages in the Cornel Law School site, the American Civil Liberties Union site and others.

The key aspects of the case were not \”Freedom of Speech/Expression\”, but that the ordinance was too broad by banning all live entertainment and the town could not prove that the nude dancing at the Showbar was any worse to society than the films and products already allowed.

With the new Taco Bell construction, care is being taken to better blend the property into the community\’s standards, and will increase drainage on the property which currently is almost 100% covered with the building and parking lot.
