Stevens Baseball Shuts Out John Jay, 15-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 9, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team pounded out 17 hits and scored 15 runs in a shutout against John Jay College on Saturday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens plated at least one run in each of the first six innings en route to its most runs scored this season and fourth win of the year.

The Ducks wasted little time getting on the board as junior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) ripped a double to left center field that brought in two runs with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. Classmate Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) started the inning off with a walk and then sophomore Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) reached on an error before the double by Allen.

Allen went 2-for-3 (two doubles) in the game with four runs scored, three RBI, three walks and a stolen base. Lowenstein batted 2-for-2 and scored twice with an RBI and a double.

After one run in the second and two more in the third, the Ducks pushed 11 runs across from the fourth to the sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) drove in four runs on the afternoon on two hits in three at bats. Hennelly delivered a sacrifice fly in the third inning and then collected his other three RBI on back-to-back singles in the fourth and fifth.

Freshman Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) also drove in a pair of runs on a double in the sixth as part of his 2-for-5 afternoon. Fellow freshman Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) collected two hits in three trips to the plate, including a double with three runs scored.

On the mound, sophomore Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) earned the starting nod and tossed four innings and gave up just three hits. Marston struck out seven batters, including four out of five batters from the first to the second inning, and punched out the side in the fourth.

The final five innings were divvied between five Ducks hurlers. Junior Craig Leopold (Edison, N.J.) was awarded the win by tossing a perfect eighth inning.

Stevens will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island beginning at 12 p.m.
