College World Series: Unusual suspects spark Hogs to win

OMAHA, Neb. — It was not the usual suspects making headlines for Arkansas in the Razorbacks’ 8-1 victory against Kent State in Saturday afternoon’s College World Series contest.

Yes, the Razorbacks’ pitching was stellar, and their defense was stout, but it was an unlikely group of players that helped produced team’s most runs since May 19 against Tennessee. 

Four players — designated hitter Joe Serrano, right fielder Brian Anderson, center fielder Matt Vinson and catcher Jake Wise — combined for eight of the Razorbacks’ 10 hits and all seven RBI against the Golden Flashes.

Gloucester County to Distribute Produce Vouchers to Seniors


(Woodbury, NJ) – Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger and Freeholder Lyman Barnes announced today that the county will offer $20 in vouchers to income eligible seniors to buy fresh produce at designated local farmers markets. Voucher distribution will begin on Monday, June 18.

NEW YORK – A Coast Guard boat crew rescued the captain of a recreational boat after his vessel caught fire near Jones Inlet, N.Y., Friday, June 15, 2012.

Coast Guard Station Jones Beach received the distress call at 5:40 p.m., from the captain of a 46-foot fishing boat reporting that his boat was on fire and there were six people aboard.

A rescue boat crew from the station was immediately dispatched and the crew assisted local fire and rescue agencies with rescuing personnel from the vessel.

\”We transferred the captain of the vessel to our boat,\” said Petty Officer 1st Class Robert Sebastio, the Officer of the Day at the Coast Guard station. \”The other passengers were transferred to the Hempstead Bay Constables\’ rescue boat.\”

Obituary: Dorothy J. Cheeseman, age 96, formerly of Gloucester City

On June 13, 2012, of Pitman, formerly of Gloucester City, NJ, age 96. She was the beloved wife of the late Duncan W., loving mother of Carole (Tony) Russo and Marcia (Ralph) Richards, cherished grandmother of Andrew (Summer), Lisa (Jeff), Donna (Jerry), Kathy, Nicole, Bubba (Danielle), and great grandmother of Jeff, Madison, Noah, Jenna, John, Zach, Billy, and Paige. Also surviving are special nieces Marylou (Tony) Furfari, Dot Evans, Pat (Harry) Purnell, Nancy Parker, and long time friend, Mary Jane Nash.

Dorothy loved going to the casinos and traveling and was a member of the Gloucester City Senior Citizens, former treasurer and choir member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Gloucester City, and former air raid warden.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet Wednesday from 10-11AM at the ETHERINGTON-CRERAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 POWELL ST., GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ. Dorothy\’s funeral service will be held at 11AM at the funeral home. There will be no evening viewing. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dorothy\’s name may be sent to Pitman Manor Associate Campaign, 535 N. Oak Ave. Pitman, NJ 08071.

GCHS’s 1972 boys’ basketball team, which captured the NJSIAA Parochial B state championship that season, returned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a glorious season, which was capped off by a 44-39 state title win over Paterson Catholic at Princeton University’s Jadwin Gymnasium.
