This was supposed to be the \”in-between\” season for St. Augustine Prep.

The Hermits won the first state title in the history of the program in 2011. They have a fleet of talented juniors and sophomores, which bodes well for 2013.

But after a ragged start to the 2012 season, St. Augustine has been among the best baseball teams in South Jersey for the last six weeks. The Hermits have risen to No. 3 in The Inquirer\’s South Jersey rankings and will face No. 1 Gloucester Catholic in the Non-Public South A final Tuesday at Rowan University.

Rams roar. Gloucester Catholic (26-4) has won nine in a row to surge back into the top spot in the rankings.

Gloucester Catholic beat then-No. 1 Bishop Eustace, 4-0, in the South A semifinals Friday behind freshman righthander John Murphy, who pitched a four-hitter.

A second-team All-Conference selection and All-Tournament performer, Maloney swatted six homers and knocked in 31 runs (both second on the team), while posting an impressive 3.53 GPA as a multidisciplinary studies major. The Las Vegas, Nev. native finished the season with a .333 average, 35 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

Tenuto led the team with a .368 average and was also named to the America East All-Tournament team after hitting .500 in three games in the conference tournament. The Audubon, N.J. native belted four homers and recorded 23 RBI to go along with eight steals and 33 runs scored. Tenuto posted a 3.30 GPA as a business management major and technological systems management minor.

Stony Brook softball has now placed eight different student-athletes on America East All-Academic teams since the squads were established in 2005-06. 

To be nominated for an All-Academic team, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their squad. In softball, position players must participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games while pitchers must make at least 10 appearances on the mound. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Representative Rob Andrews (D-1) is being challenged by newcomer Frank Tenaglio.

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez and Camden County Sheriff Charles Billingham are running unopposed.

In the race for Camden County Board of Freeholders, Jeffrey Nash, Ian Leonard and Michelle Gentek are being challenged by Michael Leonetti for three seats.

GLOUCESTER CITY

In the City Council election, incumbent Dan Spencer is facing a challenge in the Democratic Party from Michael Walters for the Ward 1 seat.

Running unopposed are James \”Bowie\” Johnson in Ward 2 and Helen Lynn Bucher and Jay Brophy in Ward 3.

The Republican Party has three candidates running unopposed for City Council: Dave Townsend in Ward 1, and Lisa Lopez and Anthony Wojtkowiak in Ward 3.
