The Tradition Continues at 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail and Stotesbury Regattas

\"\"On May 11-12, 3,500 athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada competed in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the nation and a long-time Philadelphia tradition. The two-day race, held annually on the Schuylkill River in beautiful Fairmount Park, is one of the most famous and scenic rowing routes in the world. With the sun shining on the crowd on hand for the 74th year of the famed regatta, the Men\’s and Women\’s Varsity Heavyweight Eight races lived up to their billing. Michigan claimed the varsity eight heavyweight race to capture the Aberdeen Cup for the second straight year and Duke won the women’s heavyweight eight title. On May 18-19, younger crews came to town as Philadelphia welcomed the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the world’s oldest and largest high school rowing competition. A precursor for many athletes competing in the Dad Vail, 5,000 student rowers from close to 200 high schools around the nation converged on Philadelphia in this exciting annual event.
