He Shoots and Scores

Joining the ranks of Philadelphia legends Chuck Bednarik, Julius Erving, Bernie Parent and Mike Schmidt, the Flyers’ Claude Giroux will etch his name into Philadelphia sports history when he receives the John Wanamaker Athletic Award at a ceremony during June.

The 24-year-old emerged as one of the NHL’s top stars this season, leading the Flyers with 93 points, and topping the league in scoring during the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In addition, Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider will be honored with the Sports Congress Lifetime Achievement Award, for a lifetime spent making the world a better place through sport.

Other honorees include Jerry Segal, recipient of the Robert P. Levy Community Service Award, and the Katie Kirlin Fund, to be presented with the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Sport Volunteer of the Year Award.

Baseball: Schroth delivers for Green Wave

The title is the third straight and 17th overall for Audubon (22-6), which won its final three playoff games by a run each time. The Green Wave will face Central Jersey champion Florence on Tuesday at The College of New Jersey. The winner plays in Saturday’s state final.

\”This means a lot to the program,\” said veteran coach Rich Horan, who’s directed the team to 10 sectional titles in his 21 years. \”It means the program is going in the right direction and the kids have that mentality that this is what we want every year.

\”The kids have confidence in each other. They’ve been in heated ballgames and have played a lot of tournament ball together. Three one-run wins says a lot. The kids are battle ready.\”

Schroth was also the winning pitcher, taking over for ace Andrew Schorr with no outs and Tyler Easterday on first in the fifth inning. Schorr, an East Carolina recruit, had yet to allow a hit but nine walks proved to be enough to make the change.

Madison Chain\’s home run ends Gloucester High\’s 15-4 win in South Jersey Group

 June 01, 2012 8:22 p.m.

Meg Ryan had three hits and Gloucester erupted for 15 runs in defeating Haddon Township for the South Jersey Group I softball title –

GLOUCESTER CITY — There wasn’t much drama left by the bottom of the sixth inning in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group I final between Gloucester and Haddon Township high schools Friday.

But Madison Chain certainly provided an exclamation point.

Chain blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence to invoke the mercy rule and power the Lions to a 15-4 win over Haddon Township and a sectional championship.

It’s Gloucester’s seventh sectional title since 2000. The Lions will take aim at their fifth state title starting June 5 against Central Jersey champion New Egypt, the two-time defending state champion and same team that ousted Gloucester in the same round, 10-0, last year.
