Congressman Andrews Announces Opening of Plasma Institute

\"Pine Camden, NJ – Last Thursday, Congressman Rob Andrews celebrated the opening of the new A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Camden. The new center brings 25 permanent professorial and technical jobs to Camden as well as 50 undergraduate and graduate Drexel students. Rep. Andrews helped secure more than $5 million in state and federal funds for the Plasma Institute.

\”Attracting top talent to Camden is vital to stimulating the local economy,\” said Rep. Andrews. \”Having leading physicists and researchers in the area will be a boon to small businesses and hiring.\”

Tell Congress: Sign the No Pork Pledge!

Since 1991, Citizens Against Government Waste’s Congressional Pig Book has documented \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef0133f3725211970b-320wi\" more than 100,000 pork-barrel projects costing taxpayers $290 billion. The proliferation of pork-barrel earmarks over the past 20 years has corresponded with the debasement of the federal budgetary process and Americans’ growing mistrust of their elected officials. As lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former Rep. Randy \”Duke\” Cunningham (R-Calif.) have illustrated, lawmakers and lobbyists trade in earmarks as their \”currency of corruption,\” undermining our democratic system of government.

Congress has enacted several reform measures since 2007 to reduce pork barreling and increase earmark accountability and transparency, yet earmarks continue to figure prominently in one scandal after another on Capitol Hill. In an effort to encourage more members of Congress and candidates for office to kick the earmarking habit, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) has created the No Pork Pledge (House version/Senate version).

White House Corrects Information on bin Laden Raid

WASHINGTON, May 3, 2011 – Osama bin Laden was not armed, but did resist an American military team raiding his compound in Pakistan on May 1, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today.

Initial statements said bin Laden had been armed, and that he used his wife as a shield during the raid that killed him.

The team methodically cleared the one-acre, two-building compound, moving from room to room in an operation lasting nearly 40 minutes, Carney said. \”They were engaged in a firefight throughout the operation, and Osama bin Laden was killed by the assaulting force,\” he added.

On the first floor of bin Laden\’s building, the team killed two al-Qaida couriers. A woman also was killed in crossfire. The team found bin Laden and his family on the second and third floors of the building.
