The Gloucester City News was given unfettered access into the world of Mummery, as the Durning String Band prepared to march up Broad Street in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day.
Whereas virtually every television is tuned to the annual \”strut\” each year, and thousands more watch in person along the parade route, most do not get to see exactly what goes into a performance from year to year.
With less than 48 hours to go before the big day, the band held their final full rehearsal on December 30 at an undisclosed South Jersey location.
Established in 1935, Durning chose a hybrid theme for 2011, \”Irish You A Merry Christmas,\” a mix of both traditional Irish music as well as some Christmas classics.
