The Garden State Deer Classic is presented each year to feature the outstanding white-tailed deer harvested during the previous year\’s hunting seasons and recognize the hunters who took them.

In recent years it has been held at the Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen\’s Show at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison. The 2011 show and Deer Classic will be held Thursday, January 13 through Sunday, January 16 – an event ideal both for sportsmen and women and for exhibitors, drawing 40,000 sporting enthusiasts.

A Look at the Durning String Band

By Chris Concannon

Gloucester City News

The Gloucester City News was given unfettered access into the world of Mummery, as the Durning String Band prepared to march up Broad Street in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day.

Whereas virtually every television is tuned to the annual \”strut\” each year, and thousands more watch in person along the parade route, most do not get to see exactly what goes into a performance from year to year.

With less than 48 hours to go before the big day, the band held their final full rehearsal on December 30 at an undisclosed South Jersey location.

Established in 1935, Durning chose a hybrid theme for 2011, \”Irish You A Merry Christmas,\” a mix of both traditional Irish music as well as some Christmas classics.

Freeholder Director Damminger Looking to Cut Taxes for Gloucester County Residents

Woodbury, NJ) – The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholder held its 325th Annual Reorganization meeting last week where Freeholder Robert M. Damminger was sworn-in as Director of the Board and Freeholder Warren S. Wallace, Ed. D. as Deputy Director.

\”I am humbled and excited to lead this Board. I have a lot of energy and ideas and am looking forward to working hard for the citizens of our county. One of the first items on my agenda is to cut the tax rate and we have already been working on areas to cut,\” said Damminger. \”One of the first actions I will take as Director is to eliminate health benefits for part-time elected and appointed officials who have been eligible for them in the past. I believe what we do is about public service and this sends a strong message to the taxpayers that we understand how tough times are for them,\” Damminger stated.

Damminger said that the Freeholders have cut and held the tax rate steady for the past decade,

Shep on Fishing: Borrowed rod leads to potential state sea bass record – pressofAtlanticCity.com

by Michael Shepherd

\"4d27f8aba9ea7.preview-300\" They weighed it on the boat and realized they had a potential state record. They called Jim Wallace and, in a commendable example of extra effort, he came in and opened his Jim\’s Bait and Tackle in Cape May at 7 p.m. to certify the weight and other measurements for the state-record application. The state record listed by New Jersey Fish and Wildlife is a pair that weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces (8.125 pounds), one caught in 1992 and the other in 1994. They were fishing approximately 50 miles off shore in 225 feet of water, according to Andy Jr. They had yellow-dyed squid for bait on lines with three hooks. The day did not start off well. They got to South Jersey Marina at 2 a.m. Andy Jr. reported that long-time buddy Al Cafolla, also of Carneys Point, was walking down to the boat and stepped right off the dock into freezing water that was over his head. Merendino said there was hysteria for a couple minutes as four people pulled Cafolla out of the water. Cafolla dried off and the others shared some clothes and \”re-rigged him,\” and off they went at 2:30 a.m.
