Mid Atlantic $500,000 Record Setting Week; Kridel\’s Big Eye Tuna Tops The Leaderboard

After a week of fishing that saw white marlin bite in record numbers, it was another down to $\"Big_eye\"$ the wire finish at the 2010 Mid Atlantic $500,000! Over the years the tournament has a history of producing final day heroics and 2010 would be no different. With just minutes before the scales would close at 9 p.m. on Day Five, Matt Kriedel’s Impulse IV based out of Newington, Connecticut backed to the scales at Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May with what would be the last fish to be weighed at the tournament. Moments later, weighmaster Chris Booth yelled out the weight to the large crowd which had left the tournament tent and gathered around the scales when word spread of a big fish on the way in. At 177 pounds, Kriedel’s big eye tuna sealed its spot atop the leaderboard in the tuna category and won the crew $168,812!Earlier in the evening, also in the tuna category, Anthony Matarese of Pennsville, New Jersey aboard his Reel Chaos shook-up the category a bit when he weighed a 105-pound tuna in Ocean City which would take second place and earned $100,265. Don Pyle of Annapolis, Maryland aboard his Fin-Ness finished in third place with his 84-pound yellowfin caught on Day Three and earned $78,893.

Crews Render Damaged Cylinder Safe

Crews from the Bellmawr Fire Department along with the Haz Mat unit from the Cherry Hill Fire Department responded to an incident involving a Acetyene cylinder that fell off a truck. The cylinder was not leaking however the neck of the cylinder was severly damaged. The cylinder was transported to a safe area and the contents were safely burned off under controlled condtions.

Federal government officials raided a state representative’s Pennsport office and business yesterday morning. IRS agents visited state Rep. Bill Keller’s office, 1531 S. Second St., along with his sporting goods store, K O Sporting Goods, 2001 E. Moyamensing Ave., Shauna M. Frye, an IRS spokeswoman, confirmed. Frye would not elaborate on the specific nature of the agents being there and only said they were \”on official business.\” Keller, 59, owns the sporting goods store with Mark G. Olkowski, according the Board of Revision of Taxes website.

South Philly Review: People Protest Cutbacks in Fire Dept.

Of South Philadelphia’s five engines, three are experiencing halts. Beginning Aug. 3 and repeating every fifth day, Engine 24, 1200 S. 20th St., has experienced day-tour closures from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Brown outs for Engine 3, 200-10 Washington Ave., commenced on Aug. 5 and follow the same schedule as Engine 24. By the end of the month, each will have had six recesses. The Philadelphia Fire Department — the fifth largest in the United States — constitutes 56 companies, with 23 of them subject to brown outs. During an engine’s day- or night-shift closing, personnel may find themselves traveling considerable distances to tend to a fire instead of addressing a potential inferno nearby.

$\"\"$ The night-tour brown out for Engine 53 kept it closed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday into Saturday and will do the same Aug. 25. According to Bill Gault, president of the Philadelphia Fire Fighters’ Union Local 22, Engine 10, 1357 S. 12th St., and Engine 49, 2600 S. 13th St., will handle Engine 53’s calls during its gridlocks.
