Ocean City looking at bypassing Civil Service list to hire three firefighters; Interviewing laid-off firefighters from Gloucester City and Collingswood

\”I’m looking at deviating (from the list),\” Foglio added. \”I’m a realist. I’m a manager and I have to have some fiscal responsibility. Normally we would operate in the traditional manner and take people off the list, but it takes at least nine weeks to train firefighters. At this point, at the rate we are using overtime and filling the holes we have and trained these new firefighters, it would put me in the red for overtime. At some point I would have to declare a state of emergency and money would be pulled from the 2011 budget.\”
Foglio said that would mean that \”a pound of flesh\” would come from the fire department’s 2011 budget. Foglio has interviewed firefighters from Gloucester City and Collingswood. Gloucester City has a 34-man department and is eliminating a third of that number due to a $1.2 million cut in extraordinary state aid. With retirements, eight firefighters will lose their jobs. These firefighters are scheduled to be laid off on June 30.

Rutala said that if the city hires the three firefighters from Gloucester City they would start at the base salary for incoming firefighters. The starting salary for firefighters is now around $38,000 with the implementation of a two-tier hiring system in the last FMBA (Firemen’s Benevolent Association) contract.

Community Garden Looking Good

By CNBNews.net

The Gloucester City Community Garden, Market and Atlantic Streets, is in full bloom. The project is sponsored by the Gloucester City Shade Committee. John Schmidt a member of the committee and one of the organizers of the garden was asked to give a progress report on the project.

\"Farm Schmidt writes,

We have had many residents from the neighborhood and across the city come out and help with garden and recently we planted three dogwood bushes and one tree which were donated. Each plot is 4-5 feet by 20 feet and it is up to the gardeners what they want to plant. As part of our $60 membership with the Camden Children\’s Garden we are eligible to receive flats of vegetables. Both the committee and individuals who joined has utilized it. We have planted some squash and tomatoes in the garden but every gardener can choose what they want to plant. There is no cost for a plot as we know people are struggling however if individuals wish to make a monetary donation they can. The donations will be used for the garden.

I also want to make sure to thank Mike Devlin, who runs the Camden Children\’s Garden and without whose help this garden in the City of Gloucester City would have never happened. Mike has gone above and beyond for our committee and city.

We have three blue bins which we received from the Camden Children\’s Garden from one of the shipping companies that we use to collect water so water is available to everyone at no charge. The city also donated two composters to us for the garden and Water Supt. Fred Schindler has helped with getting water to the garden.
