Training Your Dog Using Positive Reinforcement

There are many methods used to train dogs. One charismatic fellow makes big bucks promoting the domination or punishment theory; if you look up his videos on the Internet you will see him choking, shocking, and abusing dogs, all in the name of training. Some folks (like me) use a gentler approach. Although positive reinforcement training (using rewards) and positive punishment methods (choke chains, pinch collars, electronic or ‘shock’ collars) are both effective, the punishment methods can do some major damage to the canine in question.

A great way to begin training your dog is by using voice modulation and facial expression. That is, speak softly as though you were talking to a young child when you ask for a behavior. If Fido responds by offering you that behavior, smile and respond with praise. If Fido does not offer the correct response, frown and use a negative-sounding noise or a word like, \”Hey!\” In no time at all, your dog will catch on without the use of strong-arm tactics!
