Bellmawr School District May Lose $750,000 in State Aid; Possible That 14 Jobs Would Be Eliminated

Superintendent Annette Castiglione introduced students from all three schools, who showcased their talents, via the District’s \”Smart Boards,\” during November’s Bellmawr Board of Education (BOE) meeting.

Mrs.. Barr guided her kindergarten and first grade students, adding the District’s home page is always set up for the students.

Barr said there are now 27 computers in use in Burke School’s lab. She tries to use free websites for source information, avoiding unnecessary advertising.

Mrs. Maher featured her fourth grade students from Bellmawr Park School.

Miss Gleason of Bell Oaks apologized for the absence of their students, in light of the H1N1 (Swine Flu) clinic that day.

The enthusiasm of the children making the presentation spoke to the Internet as an invaluable teaching tool, with the Smart Boards proving to be an equally unexpendable sidekick to their educational guidance.

Bryan and Haines Recipients of The Joseph T. Stiles Memorial Award

Sonny Bryan of Gloucester City High School and Gregg Haines of Gloucester Catholic were the recipients of this year’s Joseph T. Stiles Memorial Awards. The awards were presented before the Thanksgiving rivalry game between the two schools, which was won by Gloucester Catholic.

The Stiles award is presented to a senior football player from both schools that are nominated by a vote of the athlete’s peers. The names are then submitted to a committee that consist of friends of Stiles who make the final selection based on the most votes the nominees receive. In case of a tie, the selection committee would then decide the outcome.

Mr. Stiles was a 1962 graduate of Gloucester High, and played offensive guard and linebacker during his four-year career on the Lions football team. Known as \”Joe the Jet,\” he is remembered for his agility and strength, but most importantly his genuine love for the game of football. Whether he was playing in a big game or a scrimmage practice, he approached every play the same – with a big heart and a \”can-do\” attitude. He was a loyal friend and teammate, who displayed excellent leadership on and off the field.

Members of the selection committee include:Bob Bevan, Bill Cleary, Bob Fritz, Sam Gager, Jim Goldschmidt and Bill Rettig.

Bellmawr Christmas in the Park December 11

By Chris Concannon

NEWS Correspondent

Holidays were the topic of the recent Bellmawr Borough Council meeting, and Di Angelo said the parade will follow Browning Road across the Black Horse Pike.

The Fire Department will deliver Santa Claus to Borough Hall, where he will help Mayor Frank Filipek and Council members throw the switch to light the tree, marking the beginning of the holiday season in Bellmawr.

Last year’s bone-chilling temperatures forced the Bell Oaks Chorale indoors. Yet, they are scheduled to perform in this year’s ceremony despite the ever-cooling autumn air.

The popular Christmas In the Park will be December 11-14 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bellmawr Recreation Centre on Creek Road.

Filipek has said this is the only event of its kind in New Jersey free of charge.

Last year’s \”sleigh rides\” drew an estimated 8,000-10,000 adults and children.

The mayor said 65 food baskets were recently distributed to local needy families for the holidays.

In other business, Class II Special Police Officer Sal Cufari is resigning from the Department after 10 years of service to Bellmawr.

Director of Public Safety John Bollinger thanked Cufari for his time and dedication to residents.

Under committee reports, Councilman Pete Di Giambattista said they would begin to work on the 2010 budget after Thanksgiving.

All business listed on the evening’s agenda was unanimously approved, with the following of note:

As to Resolution #11:221-09, known as the \”Recycling Grant,\” Councilman Di Angelo said the Public Works Department does a great job with Bellmawr’s recycling efforts.

Resolution #11:224-09 authorized agreements for Bellmawr Fire Department Stations 32 and 33 with Camden County for mobile data computers to be installed in their apparatus.

Also, Council okayed an ordinance on second reading providing for reimbursement to the Borough for services rendered by Bellmawr EMS.

Filipek wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

The next Council meeting will be Monday, December 21, at 7:30 p.m.

THANKS POLICE AND FIRE

I had another little heart problem recently, and I was talking to my wife Linda about it. She called the Gloucester City Fire Department, and boy did they ever respond!

This is from a very grateful 73-year-old man who really does appreciate his fire and police departments.

These people are very well trained and well mannered professionals. They talked with me, ran some quick checks and then off to the hospital.

All to often we take this fine service for granted or gripe when they don’t get it, then develop lock jaw when they do. Thanks again fellows, I am on the road to recovery.
