Greco, Higgins Lead Men’s Basketball to 73-56 Win Over King’s \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef01287561a923970c-800wi\"

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 20, 2009) – Senior guard George Greco (Rockville Center, N.Y.) scored 16 points and dished out 10 assists and senior forward Matt Higgins \"!cid_image001_jpg@01CA639E\" (Freehold, N.J.) poured in a team-high 19 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s basketball team to a 73-56 win over King’s College in the opening game of the 2009-10 Stevens Tip-Off Tournament at the Canavan Arena on Friday night in Hoboken, N.J. Sophomore forward Simon Smith (Cranford, N.J.) had nine points and eight boards as the Ducks did not relinquish the lead the entire night.

Higgins scored the game’s first bucket on a fast break after the tip, and Stevens was able to slowly build its lead over the first nine-plus minutes of game time.

Leading 17-13 with 10:25 to play in the first, the Ducks went on a 10-4 spurt to help build their first double-digit lead of the game. Greco and freshman Russ Thompson (West Orange, N.J.) buried triples and Higgins hit a pair of jumpers, both assisted by Greco, as Stevens was able to extend its lead to 27-17 with 4:40 left.

After the two teams traded baskets, Stevens got a jumper from freshman Sheldon Jones (Queens, N.Y.) and a three-ball from Thompson to take a 36-22 lead and eventually went into the locker room with a 36-24 edge and all of the momentum. Stevens shot extremely well in the first half, going 16-for-27 from the field, and 3-for-8 from long range. The Ducks also outscored the Monarchs (0-2) 12-6 in the paint.

The Ducks increased their lead to 16 early in the second half thanks to jumpers by Higgins and senior Ian Masone (Silver Spring, Md.), but King’s was able to fight back and cut the lead to nine with 17:49 left after junior Kevin Conroy (Chatham, N.J.) converted a pair of free throws.

Pet Tip of the Week: The Importance of Socialization

You’ve seen it happen, probably as often as I have: your friend brings home a puppy, loves it, shelters it, keeps it away from other dogs because it’s fragile. Then, one day you bring your dog over for a play date and the now 4 month old puppy attacks your dog and/or YOU! Err?

\"clip_image004_thumb2\"

Dogs need to be socialized to other dogs, new places, new people, and new situations. This is especially important between the ages of 8 weeks to 4 months. Some professionals call it the Rule of Five: 5 new places, 5 new faces, 5 new dogs, each and every day until the dog is 4 months old. Now, that’s a lot of work but the benefits will show up quickly when Fido accepts everyone—canine, feline, and human—with the same amount of confidence and joy.

That doesn’t mean that the non-social, older dog is beyond hope! If Fido growls and acts anxious around strange dogs try approaching, with both dogs on-leash, in an arch (not head-on because that may be construed as aggressive to either or both dogs) and slowly come closer while rewarding him for calm behavior. Gradually lessen the distance between the dogs until both dogs are able to remain calm when they are within a foot or two of one another. For more suggestions please give me a call and I’d be glad to talk more about it!

As always, Cleary’s Notebook encourages commentary so if you have questions please ask. And I’d like to thank Mr. Cleary for attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony here at Brother of the Wolf last Saturday!

Next week’s topic will be about the benefits of enriching your dog’s home life.

Wildcats over Rams

The top-seeded St. Joseph, Hammonton beat second-seeded Gloucester Catholic today for the state Non-Public II title at Paul VI High school. The final score Wildcats 28, Rams 14.

St. Joe last won a state title in 2006. The Wildcats have won 18 playoff championships. They won eight straight titles from 1999-2006.

Gloucester Catholic hasn\’t won a title since it captured the now-defunct South Jersey Parochial B championship in 1979.

Gloucester Catholic has only lost this season to a pair of undefeated teams in Williamstown and Delsea Regional.
