James Anthony Thornton (Tony), age 49, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Cooper Hospital. Thornton, a Glassboro native worked for USPS for over 25 years. Also known for a stellar boxing career spanning over 13 years.

He leaves behind his daughter Ashley, son Tony Jr., sister Deborah, nephew Mickell, fiancé Kim, cousins Baron and Tracy, ex-wife Carole, and a host of family, friends, and fans. Services will be 11am Thursday at Healing Wings C.O.G.I.C, 520 E. Stanger Ave., Glassboro; viewing 9-11am. Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hurffville. Tony \’The Punching Postman\’ Thornton was a champ outside the ring

IF I HAD had my way a couple of years ago, onetime super middleweight contender Tony \”The Punching Postman\” Thornton, who died Sept. 10 of complications from injuries from a motorcycle accident, would have been better known to fight fans throughout America.

During a private meeting in Las Vegas with boxing journalists, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg asked about former or current fighters knowledgeable and glib enough to merit auditions for the upcoming analyst role on \”Boxing After Dark.\” I suggested Thornton, the letter carrier from Glassboro, N.J., who was good enough to earn three cracks at some version of the world 168-pound championship, but not quite good enough to win any of those dream shots.

\”Tony is not only more well-spoken than most fighters, he\’s more well-spoken than almost everyone, including you and me,\” I told Greenburg, who nodded dutifully and then hired former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis without ever having contacted Thornton. What HBO obviously wanted was someone with a very high profile, and I guess Tony – who would have been 50 on Nov. 8 – didn\’t fit the bill.

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today advised motorists to slow down after sundown and before sunrise to reduce their risk of having a close encounter with a white-tailed deer.

Deer collisions are an annual occurrence that will continue through Thanksgiving week and begin to slow down in mid-December. For the sake of public safety, the Game Commission is urging motorists to drive cautiously after dark for the next several months.

Research has repeatedly shown that students who start the day with breakfast perform better at school.

However, millions of American children – one of every six – may not be able to get proper nourishment at home in the morning.

Current economic hardships add to the number of students who are unable to start the school day nourished and ready to learn.

With the help of Action for Healthy Kids, two schools in Gloucester City are taking important steps to help these children start the school day right.
