Bellmawr Dwelling Fire with injuries

Bellmawr NJ, On August 8th 2009 Task Force 32 was dispatched at 11:24hrs to 269 Walnut Avenue for a working dwelling fire with people trapped. Sqt 32 arrived (11:28hrs) within four minutes of dispatch and reported a 2 ½ story wood frame dwelling with fire showing from the second floor extending into the attic. Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire with a smoothbore 1 ¾ line. L-33 arrived and laddered and opened up. Additional companies arrived and secured a water supply/advanced a second 1 ¾ back up line and secured utilities. The Fire was placed under control at 11:53 hrs.

Two elderly handicapped residents were removed from the structure by Bellmawr Police Officers and several neighbors that assisted. The occupants were transported to Cooper Trauma Center and later moved to Temple Burn Center. They are being treated for injuries sustained from the incident.

Brooklawn Mayor and Council Ecstatic

\”I am extremely ecstatic hearing the news of the grant monies that Brooklawn will receive as part of the $1 billion federal stimulus funding,\” Mayor John Soubasis said.

\”I would like to thank all our local political representatives for their efforts in securing the funding,\” he said. \”A special thank you is given to Police Captain Steve Saymon, who wrote the grant application. With the monies, Brooklawn can now hire an additional police officer.\”

Time to Apply for Turkey and Deer Permits

The Fall Turkey Season and Special Area Deer Seasons Permit Application period opened on August 1st and will close at 11:59 p.m. on September 6, 2009. Applications can be made at any license agent or on-line. Successful applicants will be notified during the week of September 21.
Hunters should note that the deer permit lottery is only for 8 Special Areas; all other zones go on sale 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13.

Gloucester City School District Receives ARRA Food Grants

Gloucester City School District officials excitedly announced receiving several grants that will assist in food preparation and food availability for its students in the coming school year.

A food service equipment grant, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, was awarded.

An overwhelming amount of grant requests were submitted throughout the state, far exceeding the amount of funding allocated to New Jersey.

Gloucester City was fortunate to have $20,947 awarded for six convection ovens and one flat top stove for two schools, Cold Springs and Mary Ethel Costello schools, spokesperson Lynda Lathrop said.
