Flying WILD Educator Training

Flying WILD introduces educators and students to bird conservation through standards-based classroom activities and environmental stewardship projects. Flying WILD encourages schools and communities to implement bird festivals and bird conservation projects. In this six-hour professional development workshop participants receive an activity guide chock full of lesson plans that help get you started towards organizing your own festival with students.

The workshop will be held at Pequest Trout Hatchery, Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 8:30 to 3:00 pm. To register or for more information, contact Liz Jackson at 908-637-4125 or send email to [email protected]. Bring lunch, binoculars and a bird field guide; and dress for the weather as some activities take place outside. Registration is required. The $10 fee includes morning refreshments.

Gloucester City UEZ Director Clears Up Rumor

Recently there was a rumor circulating in Gloucester City about UEZ funds being used to purchase new fire engines for the City Fire Department. I asked Howard Clark, the City\’s UEZ Director, if the rumor was true. His response is below.

\”As you know the UEZ is a state funded entity formed to help economically distressed communities the ability to receive half of its zone member’s collection of sales tax to be utilized for projects that will help develop the community. The State also sets a percentage of collected sales tax that can be utilized for municipal services including fire, police, EMT to reduce the potential tax burden on municipalities.

\”To date, no Gloucester City UEZ funds have been used for any municipal services including fire trucks. Also, any projects that are developed at the local level must be placed on a UEZ Board Meeting agenda, discussed fully, including relevant backup data that the State requires, then voted upon by the Board of Directors.

Connor Kain, National Geographic Bee Contest Winner

GLOUCESTER CITY-Saint Mary School would like to congratulate Connor Kain, for winning the local level of the National Geographic Bee. Connor is a student at SMS and is in the 7^th Grade.

Connor Kain has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2009 New Jersey Geographic Bee. After winning at the local level, Connor then took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

Swedish firm fined for covering up illegal dumping

CAMDEN, New Jersey (AP) – The U.S. Attorney\’s Office for New Jersey says a Swedish shipping company will pay a $1 million fine and a $400,000 community service payment for covering up illegal dumping of oily waste at sea. Prosecutors say Coast Guard inspectors who boarded the oceangoing refrigerator ship M/V Snow Flower in February 2008 at the Gloucester City marine terminal found discrepancies in the ship\’s oil record book.

Sophomore forward Cori Conner scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, senior point guard Erin MacAdams added 14 points and seven assists, and seniors Kaylee Conner and Jessica Lindsay scored 10 and eight points, respectively, in the win. The Lions, who made it 15 straight victories, advance to face the Bloomfield Tech/New Milford winner in the state finals Sunday at the Ritacco Center in Toms River.

Registration for NJ Hunter Safety Course

Registration for the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife\’s Hunter Education field sessions and exams in April is now open. There will be sessions offered on three weekends and two weekdays next month.

The Hunter Education course is a home-study based program where students use a DVD/video tape (also available online!), and a supplemental manual to complete a workbook. When students have completed the material they bring their completed workbook to a course location for the written exam and field session components.
