Members of the Gloucester City Board of Education were pleased last week to hear comments by students representing each of the district’s schools.

Justin Ly, a fifth grade student at Mary Ethel Costello School, spoke about the winter activities at Costello School.

An honor student, Ly has perfect attendance and delivered a standout performance in the school Christmas play, \”Santa Goes Green.\”

Ly said he is interested in music and enjoys learning to play different instruments in his school music class. He added that he likes to read and is learning to play the piano.

Third grader Matthew Purden, 8, represented Cold Springs School. Principal Martin O’Connor said Purden is a good student who enjoys school, particularly math, and playing baseball.

\”I like the students and teachers at Cold Springs School,\” Purden said.

A 2-mile section of the 17-mile railroad line that runs from Swedesboro to Salem will be reconstructed using $1.75 million in funds allocated by the Delaware River Port Authority. The DRPA grant Ð approved last week by its commissioners Ð will be married with $500,000 in Federal Railroad Administration funds for the project.

Christian burial was held for Rose G. Leonetti (nee Garramano), 99, of West Collingswood, who passed away on January 13, 2009.

Leonetti, Jr., Wendy Marlowe, Karen (Jack) Factt, Tammy (Tim) Shatto and Linda Leonetti, great grandmother of Ricky, Benjamin and Tory Rose, sister of Mary G. (& the late Joseph) Ciprietti, Jane G. (& the late Thomas W., Jr.) Baker, Gloria (Daniel) Santone, the late Rita (& the late Robert Settimi, the late Eleanor (Don) Molincaux, the late Anna Tratta and the late Anthony J. Garramano, additionally many loving nieces and nephews.

Born in Italy, raised in Camden, Rose was for many years a secretary and a member of the 3^rd Order of St. Francis, which met at St. Batholomew’s. For over 40 years Mrs. Leonetti was a clerk in the County Probation Office in Camden, retiring in 1981. Rose lived in West Collingswood for the last 30 years.

Heads up to all of you who swore to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Let your state Legislatures know that we do not want this bill passed, and petition them to vote no on this bill, phone calls, and letters.

Under this bill any privately held uncoded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011 this includes hand loaded ammo. They will also charge a 5 cent tax on every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least by $2.50 or more. If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun.

\”WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS\”

The entire Gloucester City Little League family (Officers, Managers, Coaches, Players and Parents) would like to begin the year of 2009 with a very big \”thank you\” to everyone who in any way helped our organization through a very difficult year in 2008. The list is extensive and our sincere gratitude cannot be truly expressed in words.

Last year began with an almost unbelievable event unfolding with the discovery of the ongoing theft of our operating improvement and reserve funds. This devastating crime dealt a serious blow to the organization and deeply affected our entire membership.

A number of costly field improvements had just been initiated that would have had to be cancelled if not for the grant received from the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

A Funeral Mass was held at Mary, Mother of the Church, Bellmawr, for Mary C. Applegate, 78, of Bellmawr, who died January 12, 2009.

Mrs. Applegate was an active member of the church choir of Mary, Mother of the Church.

Beloved wife of the late Harry E. Devoted mother of Kenneth P., Sr., Thomas E. Sr., Nancy Alminde, Elizabeth J. Einsel and the late Mary C. Burr, John W. Applegate and Harry J. Applegate. Grandmother of 29 and great-grandmother of 29, sister of Sarah Hubert.

Interment was in New Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.

U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, D-N.J said today he plans to ask President Barack Obama to block federal funding for a dredging project that would deepen the Delaware River by five feet and calls for the temporary deposit of sediment in New Jersey. In June, officials from the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers signed an agreement to partner in deepening the river from 40 to 45 feet.

Bellmawr Schools Superintendent Annette Castiglione has unveiled Board of Education plans for 2009 and beyond.

An intelligent and engaging person, Ms. Castiglione outlined several Board of Education (BOE) plans, along with numerous improvements already in place, during an hour-long interview recently.

An educator for more than 30 years, she began her career upon graduation from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, including tenures in both the Philadelphia (PA), as well as Camden City (NJ) High School systems.

She said these positions helped prepare her to become a superintendent.

As a former Camden County Freeholder, Castiglione said there is an occasional need to confer with the current Freeholder Board, if the situation arises for the BOE to utilize available County resources.

\”I fished my wish\”, back on track!
I am finally out of this crazy game!
\”King me\” I hear, this is just more of the same.
 
I am a red piece and holding my ground.
This is one of the scariest games around!
Oh no I say I am about to be jumped and taken!
But then I am finally awakened.
