Sound Off Martin’s Lake – Lake or Dump?

Will Martin’s Lake still exist in the year 2020? I’m beginning to have my doubts. The Lakes Committee and Gloucester’s \”clean up day\” can only do so m $\"012608_2051_LettersToda1\"$ uch. If trash continues to be thrown into this lake at the current rate, it’s doubtful this lake will be around for long. The city has placed \”trash containers\” around the lake’s perimeter, but obviously it requires too much effort for people to deposit their empty bottles or plastic snack bags in them.

Just last week when temperatures dipped, the lake naturally began to freeze. What was once a favorite spot for winter sports, i.e., ice skating and ice hockey, now looked like a dump. Bottles and trash were strewn atop the thin ice. It certainly was not a \”Currier & Ives\” picture. What happens next, when temperatures go back up and the ice melts, all the trash sinks back under the water? How much trash can small lake absorb?

My wish for the New Year is that everyone who spends time at this pretty spot in town named Martin’s Lake, whether fishing, enjoying a picnic lunch, or just relaxing on a bench, remembers to deposit their trash in the containers provided. Let us take pride in this small park and lake so future generations can enjoy it.

Barbara Robbin Wunder, of Gloucester City, Avid Pool Shooter, former WaWa employee

On January 16, 2009, (nee Stankiewicz) of Gloucester City, NJ. Age 55 years. She was predeceased by her loving parents Edward and Marie $\"Cross$ Stankiewicz. Beloved mother of Jennifer Sorbello, Barbara Reed, Dawn and Wayne Wunder and devoted grandmother of 13. Loving sister of Carol Johnson, Donna Brasteter and Edward Stankiewicz, dear aunt to 3 nephews and darling girlfriend of Jimmy D.

Barbara was a former employee at the Gloucester City WaWa. She was also an avid pool shooter and was recently recognized by the Gloucester City Pool League for her over 25years of participation.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the ETHERINGTON-CRERAN FUNERAL HOME 700 Powell St., Gloucester City. A Funeral Service will be held 8:00pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions to the family to assist with expenses will be greatly appreciated.

Film/ GLOUCESTER CITY: Ice Skating at the Minni Hole

Ice Skating at the Minni Hole ……….
(Sunday, January 18, 2009) Memories-How many remember your days as a kid ice skating at the Minni Hole or Martins Lake, both within a block of each other on Johnson Blvd. We would spend the entire day, and rush back after supper to skate some more in the evening. To keep warm we would build a bonfire. The crowds, which included adults, would get so big some days we would bump into each other. Today as can see there is only handful of kids taking advantage of this fun activity. The same goes for Martins Lake, six kids is all that I saw there. Kids today don\’t know how to have fun it seems. They want nothing to do with any activity unless there is a computer or video game involved. I feel sorry for them.~BILL CLEARY
