Hero of Hudson River Crash Landing Got Start in Air Force

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2009 – The pilot who crash-landed a crippled airliner $\"1\"$ in New York\’s Hudson River this afternoon, saving 155 lives on board, is an Air Force Academy graduate who received his pilot training in the Air Force.

Chelsey B. \”Sully\” Sullenberger steered US Airways Flight 1549 toward the river when both engines failed less than five minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. All 150 passengers and five crew members survived the incident.

Sullenberger is an Air Force Academy graduate who served in the Air Force from 1973 to 1980, according to his resume posted on the homepage of his company, Safety Reliability Methods, Inc.

Smoke Detectors Credited with saving Bellmawr Family

Last night at 1:00am The Bellmawr Fire Department, Task Force 32, was dispatched $\"091808_2303_1\"$ to 24 Apple Ave for a reported house fire. The First arriving crews had visible fire in walls running along side both sides of the brick chimney for the fireplace. Crews opened up the wall outside and inside and used a 1 ¾ waterline to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire. There were cracks within the fire box which allowed the heat from the fireplace to enter the wall cavity and ignite the structural members. SEE PHOTOS

Chief Jim Burleigh credited smoke detectors for providing early warning and the crews that did an outstanding job all while enduring the freezing temperatures.

Mutual aid from Runnemede, Barrington and Mt Ephraim Fire Departments assisted at the scene.

This fire occurred during the overnight hours when statistics show you are more likely to die from a fire. \”The home was equipped with working smoke detectors that operated properly providing early warning to the occupants, there is no doubt another tragedy was adverted, stated Chief Burleigh. Bellmawr’s last fatal fire was last August, were an 87 year old female perished in home that did not have working smoking detectors. The occupants’ from overnight, two adults and two infants were all sleeping when they were alerted by the smoke detectors and were able to safely escape.

The Bellmawr Fire Department wants to remind all residents that they provide FREE smoke detectors and batteries. You can obtain them by calling the Borough Hall at 856-933-1313 and leaving your information.

Bellmawr: EARLY MORNING CHIMNEY FIRE –

On January 16 at 12:57 am, Bellmawr Fire Department\’s Task Force 32 – consisting of Runnemede, Barrington and Mount Ephraim were dispatched to 24 Apple Avenue just off the Black Horse Pike for a reported dwelling fire. Police arrived to find visible fire to the exterior of the fire place and attempted to make a quick knock with a water can.

$\"2009.1.16$ Bellmawr Battalion 303, Scottie Kibler arrived with a 1 and a 1/2 story wood frame dwelling with light smoke from the front of the house. Firefighters found fire in the wall adjacent to the fireplace with medium smoke in the attic and were opening up to check for further extension. The fire was placed under control shortly before the 30 minute mark. Companies cleared the scene at 2:41 am.

No firefighter nor civilian injuries were reported and the blaze is being investigated by CFM 13, Jim Burleigh of the Camden County Fire Marshal\’s Office.

Harry S. Brown, of Brooklawn, \”The Mayor of Horton Avenue\”

On January 13, 2009. Age 78. Of Brooklawn. Predeceased by his parents Isaac C. and Sarah F. Brown (nee Stanley). Devoted and loving husband of Helen Sarah Brown (nee Barr). Devoted father of Dr. Harry C. (Carolyn) Brown, Robert J. (Michele) Brown, Karen A. (Joseph) Clayton and Philip C. (Gabriella) Brown. Loving grandfather of Melissa, Kevin, Andrew, Harrison, Stephanie, Sarah and Philip. Predeceased by his sisters Dorothy Sturgeon and Shirley Fisher. Cousin of James Gallagher and many nieces and nephews.

Harry was voted \”handsomest\” of his Gloucester High School class of 1949. He worked 33 yrs as a Design/Construction Engineer for Campbell Soup in Camden, NJ. Prior to Campbell Soup, Harry worked for DiPaolo Clothing in Hammonton and Camden Shipyard. Harry enjoyed bowling, fixing things around the house and spending time with family, especially his \”Sweetie Pie\” Helen. Neighbors called Harry the \”Mayor of Horton Ave\”. Harry will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his viewing on Monday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 am at the McCANN-HEALEY FUNERAL HOME: 851 Monmouth Street, (at Brown Street) Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth St. Gloucester City. Interment Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro.
