WEST DEPTFORD – The returning players to the Gloucester Catholic High School girls soccer team have plenty of championship experience, after putting together a 20-1-1 state championship season in 2007.
So for the West Deptford 7-v-7 Summer League, the young Rams were on their own, as the \”veterans\” didn\’t attend the league.
Sophomore Korrie Harkins saw varsity time last season, but ………

There’s no shortage of fish in this area, and many anglers can attest to that.
Robin Scott, of Ray Scott’s Dock in Margate, said the back bay in her area is stocked with fish. Scott and crew are currently celebrating 50 years and she reported that she hasn’t seen so many fish in all her years as she has this season.
\”I don’t recall a better season,\” Scott said. \”There is no shortage of flounder, and there is no reason the season should be shortened or extending of the limit size should be considered.\” Scott is referring to the constant debate of the political state of flounder fishing.
Scott said anglers of all ages are getting out on the water enjoying a day of fishing. Whether it’s on a charter deck boat, kayak or small engine boat, there’s lots of action and everyone is coming in with dinner.
Scott suggests bringing out a smaller engine boat that doesn’t draw a lot of water and has a good drift. She said it would help with flounder fishing. There hasn’t been any specific rigs or bait outfishing the other. Just about everything is working, she said.
Frequent patrons to Ray Scott’s Dock are Lynn and Fred Simon, of Philadelphia. The Simons tipped Scott off with a rigging trend. Place three frozen sperring through the eyeball. The Simons catch fish within minutes of casting. Scott has also shared information concerning using flounder as bait as it was put out by the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife.

Finally after decades of promises there are some positive signs happening at the former Coast Guard Base, King Street and the Delaware River, Gloucester City.
The Coast Guard Base was vacated in 1987. And several years later the federal government gave the deed to the City of Gloucester City. And there the base has set for nearly 15 years.
Each election some politician running for office would announce a grandiose plan for the site but nothing much came of those promises but more development studies.

This past week however the City installed floating docks, gangways and a loading platform on the pier. The docks will be used to tie up the City’s 65 foot sailing vessel, The North Wind, along with the Philadelphia base Flag Ship Charters. Plus this improvement will enable larger boats to safely dock at the pier.
Money to purchase the $30,000 docks came from a state improvement grant.
Earlier this month Mayor Bill James said, \”The pier is one of our gems. We haven\’t used it, and were going to begin to use it. We\’re starting to take action, we\’re going to make things happen.\”
Several businesses and residents helped out with the installation donating their labor, knowledge and equipment.
Tuesday the Mayor said, \”Gloucester City is fortunate to have so many civic minded businesses and people that are willing to contribute to projects such as this. On behalf of the citizens of Gloucester City I like say thank you to all of you.\”
Those involved included: Lou Sarlo (photo above) and his son Lou Jr., Capt. Chuck Reed, who provided his maritime skills and leadership , John Schmidt who donated his labor, Barron Iron works, Ferry Fence and employees from the City Water Department.
Last month the Planning Board and Zoning Board approved a resolution from the Gloucester City Historic Preservation Commission for 29 new homes to be built adjacent to the old Coast Guard Pier.
The resolution passed by the City Planning Board ensures that the new development will be constructed with historic architecture features including a mixture of historic-era looking siding and bricks.
The developer will still have to come before the board to receive variances for construction. One issue that is still undecided is whether or not the new homes will be powered by solar energy.

NEW YORK – Charlie Manuel has two rules. Two. Hustle, and be on time.
You don\’t have to be an MVP or an all-star, a Gold Glove winner or a home-run king. You don\’t have to put the seat down, or chew with your mouth closed, or say \”excuse me\” when you spit. All you have to do to be a member in good standing on Manuel\’s Philadelphia Phillies is hustle and be on time.
In about seven weeks, Jimmy Rollins has broken both rules. First, he didn\’t hustle.

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2008 – Coalition and Afghan forces killed groups of enemy fighters during operations in Afghanistan this week, military officials said.
While coalition forces yesterday searched compounds in the Sayed Abad district of Wardak province for a Taliban commander, a cadre of militants inside a barricaded house attacked troops with grenades, machine guns and small-arms fire.
Coalition forces fought back using small arms and grenades, and they called in an air strike, killing an unknown number of the enemy fighters, military officials said.
Combined forces also came under ambush during a July 21 operation in the Maruf district of Kandahar province. As troops patrolled the area, militants attacked from a fortified position, using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. The combined force returned small-arms fire and called for close-air support. The retaliation killed several militants and destroyed their attack position, military officials said.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan on July 21, Afghan national security forces and coalition forces observed a group of enemy fighters amassing along a ridgeline in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province. As the armed fighters moved into fortified fighting positions, the combined forces engaged them with small-arms fire and called for close-air support, killing the militants.
No Afghan or coalition forces were injured or killed during the engagement, military officials said.

When Gloucester Catholic High School went looking for a boys basketball coach this summer, it was pretty much a given that the new boss would come from inside the Rams\’ family.
Todd Powers didn\’t play hoops at Gloucester Catholic, and he didn\’t even attend the school. But nobody can dispute that he is exactly what the Rams were looking for.
