So this has felt like home from the first day I moved here.\”

Berenato\’s energy and enthusiasm have been infectious, and she has been called a miracle worker because she has been able to turn the Panthers from one of the nation\’s worst women\’s programs to one that is knocking on the door to becoming one of the nation\’s elite.

Thus if winning — this is the third consecutive season the Panthers have won 20 or more games, the first time they\’ve ever accomplished that feat — was the only criteria to judge a coach, Berenato would have to be considered an overwhelming success.

It is for that reason that Berenato has been named the 2008 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the year. This is the second consecutive season she has won the award, and like last year, much of it has to do with the fact that she has led the Panthers to the NCAA tournament and taken them to heights they had never achieved.

BASEBALL TEAM WINS FIVE STRAIGHT IN COCOA BEACH
(March 18) The Stockton baseball team swept a doubleheader from Medaille (NY) by scores of 8-1 and 14-7 in Cocoa Beach. Matt Allen (Salem/Woodstown) led the Ospreys by going 4-6 with a double, home run and five RBI in the twinbill. Stockton batters slugged five home runs in the doubleheader.

In the opener, Scott Fisher (Toms River/TR East) went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI while Allen was 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Winning pitcher Joe Mihalyi (Hamilton/Nottingham) tossed a complete game and allowed one run on eight hits with four strikeouts. The Ospreys broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning on their way to the 8-1 victory.

Stockton plated six runs in the top of the first inning of the nightcap. After Medaille responded with two runs, the Ospreys scored three more times in the top of the second for a 9-2 lead on their way to the 14-7 win. Allen and Jeff Lundell (Henderson, NV/Kentridge (WA)) each went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI. Craig Rich (Hamilton/Steinert) and Joe Sacerdote (Deptford/Gloucester Catholic) also blasted home runs in the game.
(March 20) Stockton scored five runs in the final three innings and defeated Bridgewater State 6-3 in Cocoa Beach. Jeff Lundell and Matt Allen each went 2-5 with a double. Eddie Ortiz (Vineland/Vineland) was 2-4 with two runs scored. Winning pitcher Scott Fisher fanned 14 batters and scattered eight hits in eight innings. John O’Hara (Clayton/Gloucester Catholic) pitched a scoreless ninth frame for the save.

Stockton took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Lundell in the top of the first, but Bridgewater State responded with three runs in the bottom half for a 3-1 lead. In the seventh inning, the Ospreys capitalized on three Bridgewater State errors and scored three runs to go ahead 4-3. Joe Sacerdote and Ortiz both singled and scored in the eighth inning as Stockton added two insurance runs on its way to the 6-3 triumph.

(March 21) Stockton concluded its week-long stay in Cocoa Beach with a doubleheader sweep of Penn College by scores of 11-1 and 6-3. The victories extended Stockton’s winning streak to five games and completed the team’s successful trip to Florida with an 8-1 record. The Ospreys also improved to 12-3 overall as they return to campus and resume play for the bulk of their schedule.

BASEBALL: Matt Allen (Salem/Woodstown) went 4-6 with a double, home run and five RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Medaille. Allen also was 2-5 with a double in a 6-3 win over Bridgewater State.
LACROSSE: Keith Bologno (Glen Gardner/Voorhees) totaled 11 points on five goals and six assists in two Stockton games last week.
SOFTBALL: Kaitlyn Corica (Iselin/JFK) was named the NJAC Pitcher of the Week after posting a 3-1 record with 28 strikeouts and a 0.63 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched last week.
WOMEN’S TENNIS: Jessica Victor (Wyckoff/Ramapo) went undefeated in singles (4-0) and 3-1 in doubles in Stockton’s four matches in Hilton Head last week.
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Abad Akhtar (Atlantic City/Atlantic City) was named the NJAC Track Athlete of the Week after placing fourth out of 25 runners in the 1500m run at the Stockton Invitational.
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Victoria Barden (Bayville/Central) won the high jump and long jump at the Stockton Invitational, and she was selected the NJAC Rookie of the Week.

DES MOINES, Iowa – For the second time in as many games, junior Kia Vaughn (Bronx, N.Y.) paced four players in double figures as Rutgers moved to the Greensboro Regional semifinals with a 69-58 win over Iowa State in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

Vaughn had a season-best 23 points, topping her previous season high reached versus Robert Morris (22 points) in first round action on Saturday. The center scored 17 points in the first half, including a string of 11 straight.

Sophomore guard Epiphanny Prince (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 17 points highlighted by a 3-of-5 performance from behind the arc.

Senior guard Matee Ajavon (Newark, N.J.) added 16 points and seven assists. Senior Essence Carson (Paterson, N.J.) chipped in 10. The upperclassman combined for 10 of the team’s 11 assists and six of the squad’s 11 steals.

Junior Heather Ezell paced ISU (21-13) with 19 points, followed by Amanda Nisleit with 15.

The second-seeded Scarlet Knights (26-6) will face sixth-seeded George Washington at the Greensboro Coliseum on Sunday, March 30. The teams met earlier in the season with RU posting a 67-42 road victory on Nov. 18

Tickets for the regional games in Greensboro will be available by calling the Rutgers Athletics Ticket Office at 866-445-GORU. Tickets are $26 per session

Rutgers led 39-31 at the break but ISU cut the lead to four three times in the first six minutes of the second half. They trailed 45-41 following a lay-in by Kelsey Bolte.

Rutgers responded with a pair of three-pointers by Prince, both from the far baseline and each off a feed from Ajavon. The last triple pushed the Scarlet Knights ahead, 51-41 with 12:47 remaining.

A bank shot by Ajavon with 10:33 to go gave RU its largest lead of the second half at 55-44. The Cyclones would not go away, scoring 10 of the game’s next 14 points. A three-pointer by Nisleit off an inbounds possession with 5:00 on the clock cut Rutgers’ lead to five, 59-55.

Ajavon and Carson responded with the next two buckets for RU to push the advantage back to nine with less than four minutes remaining.

After the Cyclones took a 4-3 lead at the 16:17 mark of the first half, Rutgers pieced together an 8-0 run to push ahead by seven. Four different players scored during the spurt for RU. The lead for ISU would be its only of the night. The Scarlet Knights led by as many as 12 in the first half.

Rutgers shot 54.2 percent from the field, including a 55 percent showing in the second half.

Ajavon, Carson and Prince were three of the 40 women’s basketball players nationwide named as finalists for the 10-member State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, it was announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Monday evening.

The All-America squad will be announced on April 5, at 9:45 a.m. in Tampa, Fla.
