Gloucester Catholic Grad died in plane crash/We Are Marshall is about that Tradegy

Note: The movie We Are Marshall has been released this week on DVD. For those who are unaware Al Carelli, Gloucester Catholic High School Class of \’61 was one of coaches who died in the plane crash that killed the Marshall football team. Below is a letter received about Al from Gus Danks. It was first posted in December 2006.

Bill,

Best wishes to you and your family for great holidays. Your notebook is great. I look at it all the time. It\’s wonderful to have a reliable way to stay up on Gloucester City news no matter where you are. To have experienced Gloucester City in any way is to love it. One of the most fortunate things that ever happened to me in my life was to have played for the \”little Mustangs\” when I was a kid and to be coached by Bill Flynn and Johhnie Powell, and to have gone to Gloucester Catholic, thanks to Al Carelli and Ed Hlopak.

Just a note that may interest you and your readers, the \”We Are Marshall\” movie opens this weekend, I think. Most of the Marshall football team, coaches, and fans were killed in a plane crash on November 14,1970. As you may remember, Al Carelli was killed in that crash. He was married and had two small sons. His parents and sister Linda were devastated.

Al ( in photo from GCHS 1961 yearbook) was raised in Lindenwold, NJ. An outstanding athlete, he graduated from Gloucester Catholic in 1961. He was Senior Class president, was on the track team, and played football for the Rams. In his senior year he was named \”All South Jersey\” at center.

I went to grade school wth Al. He lived two blocks from me, as did Ed. We played basketball on our school playground all the time. He was also an excellent piano player. \”Canadian Sunset\” was one of his specialities, as was singing out \”Little Darlin\’\” at the top of his lungs, particularly the beginning part. Anyone who knew Al in grade school or high school couldn\’t forget it.

Al was a great guy, had a great sense of humor and was a person of real character. There wasn\’t anyone who knew him who didn\’t like him. He was the best of the best.

Best wishes,
Gus (Danks) GCHS Class of 1963 Read review

Mens Soccer: Rider University 2, George Washington 1

WASHINGTON, D.C.–It isn\’t how you start, it is how you finish that counts. Despite giving up a goal in the first minute of play, the Broncs came back to upset George Washington Saturday afternoon. \”This was a great win,\” said Rider head coach Russ Fager. \”They have a good team so this was a great day.\”

Rider freshman Tom Antonucci (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored his first collegiate goal on a header from six yards out to give Rider (3-4) a 2-1 lead with 5:32 left in the first half.

The goal came off of a pass from senior Lee Tomasso (Westfield) on a free kick. \”We played a serve in from Lee, it was a set piece, one of their players deflected it and Tom Antonucci ran back and headed the ball into the net,\” Fager said. \”It was a timely place to be and a good place to finish.\”

\”Lee hit the ball to the back post and I was being marked around the \’pk\’ area,\” Antonucci said. \”I jumped backwards and headed it in while I was falling down. It was just a great ball by Lee.\”

Junior Colin Jennings (Wall) scored his first goal as a Bronc to tie the score at 1-1 14 minutes into the game. Jennings had two of Rider\’s four shots for the game. \”I don\’t think Colin actually scored that goal, although they gave it to him,\” Fager said. \”It was about a 50 yard serve from Colin that went in off of a defender\’s head. They didn\’t call it an \’own goal\’ so Colin was credited with a long one.\”

\”Everybody has been working real hard and that goal rewarded everybody for the hard work,\” Jennings said. \”They got one early so I felt we deserved a lucky one too. GW has a very good squad, fully funded with the full amount of scholarships, so coming down here and stealing one from them is a good win.\”

Reminiscent of last season, GW (3-3) scored just 13 seconds into the game. \”They came out playing long ball and that quick goal was very reminiscent of last year,\” Fager said. Last season GW took a 1-0 lead over Rider just 18 seconds into the game and won 2-1 at Rider. In that game, Rider came back and tied the score just 18 seconds later, and the Colonials scored the game-winner late in the contest.

Senior co-captain Mark Ockenhouse (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) was named the Player of the Game by Fager. \”The first thing that went through my head was \’not again\’,\” Ockenhouse said of the early GW goal. \”I think they actually scored quicker this year, which I didn\’t think was possible. They hit a long ball down the left side, a quick ball to the right and we had a miss-communication between the backs.\”

The Colonials out-shot Rider 18-4, including 10-0 in the second half. GW out-shot Rider 8-4 in the first half, but both teams had three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, when all of the scoring took place. \”They put a lot of pressure on our backs,\” Antonucci said, \”and it seemed like they were attacking with a lot of guys.\”

Rider junior goalkeeper Randall Zapolski (Lawrence) made three saves. \”Randy played extremely well,\” Fager said. \”Randy played incredible,\” Ockenhouse said. \”That\’s the best I\’ve seen him play all season. He was coming off his lines, organizing from the back, making great saves. I can\’t say enough about him.\”

Greg Yahr made one save for GW. GW had 12 corner kicks to Rider\’s one.

Rider travels to NJIT Tuesday evening. The Broncs will again try to finish strong, even if they get off to a slow start.

Gloucester City Mustangs Football Opening Day a Great Success

see more sports

Gloucester City Mustangs Youth Football Opening day (Saturday September 15) was a HUGE success and the weather was just perfect.

Mayor James played the bagpipes. The organization dedicated the field for 2007 to Gloucester Catholic High School Coach Dougherty for his past and current contributions.

Example: this year Coach Dougherty arranged for the Gloucester Catholic High School buses (a total of three) to take all 159 players to weigh- in at 6:00am.

The field looked great thanks to the City employees from the Public Works Department for their help.

There was a large crowd in attendance at last Saturday’s ceremonies and the crowds stayed to watch the games which lasted into the evening.

The Mustangs will be following suit with Gloucester City High School and have retired Marc Ryan’s # 19 jersey in his remembrance.

The Mustangs play the Jersey Pines (Hammonton) at the Johnson Blvd field on Saturday. Family and friends of the players are urged to attend.

The Mustangs are members of the South Jersey Independent Youth Football Association.

Rutger\’s Coach Not Happy about Photos

by Tom Luicci

Thursday September 20, 2007, 5:00 AM

Greg Schiano has been as fiercely protective of his personal life through the years as Rutgers\’ offensive line has been with Mike Teel. His family almost never gets touched.

So it was interesting to see his reaction after practice on Wednesday when the Knights\’ head coach was asked what he thought about pictures of his new house being posted on the internet. The house, under construction, is a Kenny Britt fade route from Rutgers Stadium. And there it was, shown from three different angles, on rivals\’ Rutgers football message board.

Schiano was obviously not happy about it.

\”What are you going to do?\” he said tersely. \”That\’s life.\”

Asked by a reporter if he was bothered by the pictures, Schiano, a private man in a very public job, indicated he was.

\”I wish it didn\’t have to be that way,\” he said. \”Usually, they keep that stuff — I don\’t know who `they\’ are, but the adminstrators of the (message) boards and stuff — I think they try to keep your personal life personal.

\”I don\’t know if somebody sits there and watches all day.\”

There was nothing offensive about the pictures except that they were an obvious invasion of Schiano\’s privacy. It\’s a nice looking house. Spacious but not prententious. I admit it, I looked at the pictures when I heard they were on line.

But is that something that people — Rutgers fans — really care about? And at what point do those fans cross the line of being a little too zealous?

As miffed as Schiano was by the pictures, he was quickly able to shrug it off and even called over the beat writers to let them in on a rare private moment.

He told us that he suggested to his wife Christy that they install field turf on one side of the house so that his children — three boys and a girl — could play outside year-round. He wasn\’t looking for anything elaborate, he said. Just enough for the kids to get a good neighborhood football game together now and then.

\”Know what she said?\” Schiano asked, referring to his wife.

He then made the thumbs down gesture.

Sound reasoning didn\’t work either, since he tried arguing that the kids wouldn\’t drag mud in or have grass stains if they had a small field turf area.

The thumb stayed down.

By the way, since some segment of the Rutgers football nation apparently has to know, Schiano and his family should be in their new digs soon enough.

\”Hopefully, sometime in October,\” he said. \”It\’s getting there.\”
