Regarding the Missing or Damaged Street Signs

Hello all,

Just an update on the street sign issue (on S. Harley anyway). I called the Gloucester City Public Works Department and had a pleasant experience with the lady who takes the calls. Don\’t want to mention her name in a public message, but do have to say she was extremely nice, very polite and helpful.

Apparently the city did not know our sign was missing and it

appears no one has called about it in the past. She informed me she
would take care of the matter and was very kind about it. I also
mentioned our parking issue up the corner with some of the cars parked
on the corner protruding onto Thompson Ave. I inquired about a sign
possibly being put up or maybe some painted curbs to deter parking so
close.

If anyone has ever turned down our street or left our street,

you\’ll know that it is impossible to see in either direction on
Thompson to see if cars are coming (unless you have a truck that sits
up high enough to see over the parked cars). And when you do make that
turn, you get the feeling you\’re driving a Mack Truck making that wide
turn.

Not to mention a few times kids have run out in between those

cars and you also can\’t see the kids crossing the street coming home
from/going to school until you come right upon them at the corner.

Just want to say Kudo\’s to the lady I spoke with today for her kindness in helping with this matter. She was passing the word on to her manager so hopefully a new sign will be erected soon.

Anyone missing a sign, please give them a call. They seem very eager to help in these instances. The phone number for the Public Works Department is 456-0781.

DiNics Roast Beef moving to West VA

Transplant craves old diner

By KEVIN RIORDAN
Courier-Post Staff

MOUNT EPHRAIM

The Harwan Theater is coming down, but the adjacent DiNic\’s Roast Beef, a former White Tower restaurant, is moving on.

To West Virginia.

A self-described \”dinerholic\” who grew up in Collingswood is paying to have the landmark little eatery picked up and trucked about 300 miles from the Black Horse Pike to his home in Morgantown, W.Va. The Mount Ephraim site is being cleared for construction of a Walgreens.

\”I always wanted a diner,\” John Shoaf, a 64-year-old retired teacher and respected preservationist, said Thursday. \”Most people pretty much think it\’s crazy. My better half thinks I\’m out of my mind.\”

A 1960 Collingswood High School graduate, Shoaf is hardly unique in his love of diners, which have inspired numerous scholarly and pop-culture books, as well as fan sites on the Web. The Mount Ephraim White Tower meets the definition of a diner despite its minuscule size because it\’s a manufactured structure and was shipped to its site (in 1946 or thereabouts, Shoaf believes).

Indeed, as Shoaf shared via e-mail, \”when I was younger, my parents told me I could go anywhere for my birthday, and I always (went to) White Tower (on) Admiral Wilson Boulevard . . . for a sack of hamburgers.\” So Shoaf is willing to spend his hard-earned money — Shoaf won\’t say how much — to bring the one-time home of that taste to West Virginia.

He\’ll place the old White Tower on land he owns overlooking I-79.

Got a question? ASK BILL

Bill. I see a new playground being built at Burlington and Middlesex St. I believe it says Welcome to Angel\’s Playground. Is this city owned, or private? Who can use the playground? Have been checking your site each day haven\’t seen anything. Thanks for any info. Verna

Dear Verna
I spoke with Gloucester City Mayor Bill James and he tells me the City is building a new playground on the site of the Three Corner Park, at Burlington and Middlesex Streets. He explained the former Three Corner Park playground was beyond repair.
So to answer your question (s) the park is city owned and when it is completed it will be open to the public for their use. I hope this clears up your inquiry.

If anyone else is curious about something they see or hear that is happening in the City, write to [email protected]. and I will try to find an answer for you.
